Carlesimo on Kings List as interviews begin

The Sacramento Kings have not formally requested permission to interview San Antonio Spurs assistant coach P.J. Carlesimo for their head-coaching vacancy, but Kings co-owner Joe Maloof indicated Tuesday that the request is forthcoming after the Spurs' season ended Monday night.
"I think we'll probably end up talking to P.J.," Maloof said, "but Geoff is really handling all that."
Geoff is Geoff Petrie, Sacramento's president of basketball operations. Maloof declined to reveal any other names on the list of candidates Petrie has assembled but did say that he, brother Gavin and Petrie will begin conducting interviews Wednesday in Las Vegas.
NBA coaching sources told ESPN.com that Golden State assistant Mario Elie, Memphis assistant Eric Musselman -- formerly the Warriors' head coach -- and John Whisenant of the WNBA's Sacramento Monarchs are expected to meet with the Kings this week as they advance the search for Rick Adelman's replacement.
Maloof, meanwhile, added that New York's Larry Brown -- contrary to widespread speculation -- is not likely to be pursued by the Kings if Brown's tenure with the Knicks is soon terminated as expected.
"Obviously he's one of the best coaches of all-time," Maloof said. "But I think at this time, we probably wouldn't be interested. He's under contract to another team anyway. We haven't even given [Brown] a thought."
Carlesimo's name surfaced immediately as a top contender to succeed Adelman, with the Maloofs known to be fond of San Antonio's organizational approach. The Cleveland Cavaliers also borrowed from the San Antonio model last offseason by hiring Spurs alumni Danny Ferry and Mike Brown as their new GM-coach tandem.
The success of the Spurs' playoff conquerors, however, could enhance Elie's candidacy, according to coaching sources.
Elie and Dallas Mavericks coach Avery Johnson were the most vocal leaders on the Spurs' team that broke through in 1999 to win the first of San Antonio's three championships. Johnson has guided the Mavericks to the Western Conference finals in his first full season; Elie is an on-the-rise assistant with an intense approach similar to Johnson's.
Elie also has an existing relationship with fellow New Yorker Ron Artest, Sacramento's enigmatic new franchise player.
Don Nelson, Johnson's predecessor with the Mavericks, has also been linked to the Kings' job, in part because Nelson already works for the Maloofs as one of the stars in a television project that could wind up on HBO. George Clooney is producing a show for the Maloofs' entertainment arm in which Nelson serves as the coach of a fictional expansion team, along with former NBA stars Vlade Divac, Norm Nixon and Marques Johnson.
Yet Joe Maloof told ESPN.com on May 10 that Nelson's reputation for free-wheeling offense -- as opposed to the defensive mindset Sacramento craves now that Artest is a King -- gave the Kings some hesitation.
"We love Nellie," Maloof said. "But we do feel like defense has to be the priority. We've seen it with the Kings and we've seen it with our WNBA team -- defense wins championships."
It is not yet known if the Kings will request permission to speak with Stan Van Gundy, who remains under contract with the Miami Heat after handing the team back to Pat Riley in December, or Phoenix Suns assistant Marc Iavaroni, both of whom have mentioned as possible candidates.
But Maloof did say earlier this month that the final decision on Adelman's replacement will be ownership's as much as Petrie's, in spite of Petrie's reputation as one of league's most accomplished team-builders.
"We have to be heavily involved, because this decision is so important for the future of the franchise," Maloof said. "We want to do this as quickly as possible and then leave Geoff and [the new coach] alone."

Wow, both posted at 10:59... AMAZING!!! (referring to the post below with the same article, that was posted at 10:59 as this article was posted at 10:59)

And ONCE AGAIN they try and put the Brown rumor to rest. Of course, I'm sure some in the media will say this is just a smokescreen.

;)

Marc Stein has taken the old and already known and acted as though it was breaking news.

Thats all I wanted to hear. And the part about Larry Brown. And the part about Mario Elie. :D

I like Carlesimo. He has a lot of experience with the Spurs and can really help this team defensively

Wouldn't mind seeing Elie as the new coach at all.

Elie might be fine...PJ, though? I'd pass --- given his history with headstrong players, I'm not sure I'd want him coaching either Ron or Bonzi (assuming he's resigned).

artest happy = me happy.

artest likes mario. i like mario.

i'm officially on the elie bandwagon and off the "i hate larry brown but miss the spotlight on sacramento so i'd welcome him anyway" bandwagon.

I just think it would be really odd to have PJ follow Adelman....again. He has followed Adelman after he was let go at Portland and Golden State.

Not only would Elie be a great choice we would be able to steal him from the Warriors who were grooming him to be their next coach.

Im for Elie. Most definitely. Carlisimo would also be good, but I want young. Avery just broke the mold with the Mavs.

Why the love for Mario Ellie???

what are mario ellie's credentials?

how do we know he will be a defensive minded head coach???

from what i remember he was a good offensive player, not a great defensive player... just because Avery Johnson is doing well in Dallas, how does that translate into Ellie being the same coach???

please explain everyones love for mario ellie???

I like the names listed in the article. Although I am not that enamored with Carlisimo, I can understand why the Maloofs are interested in him. I mean, he has been with San Antonio, so he must have gleaned something from Pop. Personally, I just cannot get past the whole choking incident. I would hate to seee Ron go Spreewell on him. I know that happened a long, long time ago, but something like that is hard to get past.

I was listening to 1140am recently and they were talking about the whole coaching situation and the trend in the league towards younger and seemingly more inexperienced coaches. Their thoughts seemed to be that in today's NBA, a coach needs to be more of a motivator that the players respect/trust rather than an Xs and Os guru. From what I hear about Elie hes totally respected around the league. If guys will listen to him, and he has a bench full of assistants for the Xs and Os part of the job, why not give him the go? Besides, he played in this league and won 3 championships- I'm sure hes no slouch when it comes to drawing up plays. Besides, his nickname is "Super Mario!" How tight is that? :D

Actually Elie was a good defender from what I've gathered. He was a team player that brought energy and was clutch. Here's more:

Mario Elie - Why? Well, Montgomery could well be out with his bad 2 years there in GS, and is of course an asst. of Montgomery's (don't think that matters). Has a NYC connection with Ron, Portland connection with Petrie (early 1990s), and from what I remember, was a tough-minded, clutch player. Won three championships being a key member on each team - back-to-back w/ Rockets, and then the Spurs in 1999. He was also with the Spurs coaching staff before moving to GS sometime ago. I also remember him being rumored in coaching job rumors this season and last summer. He also has played in Ireland, Greece, Spain, Italy, and has picked up a reputation as one of the more respected players in the game.

Here's some more on that from Stein:

NO. PJ followed Rick in both GS and Portland and failed both times. He has had no success outside of his role in SA as an assistant to a great coach who had a bunch of great players. There is no reason to think he can manage a potentially volatile team or shape a team to be great. He's got name recognition but not much else. I would much much rather take a young guy like Elie or an older proven guy like Van Gundy than PJ. Way too many better candidates to go after him.

I had a serious feeling we would be waiting until the Spurs season ended before we would hear about the tentative interviews to begin... and alas I was correct.

Plus, well, last two times did not end well.

Out of all the frontmost candidates so far I think I want Elie.

Yes Elie was a very good defensive player when he played, but that does not make him a defensive oriented coach. Don Nelsen was also a good, tough defensive player and he turned out to be a soft offensive minded coach.

Originally I was very much in favor of PJ, but I have shifted more towards Muselman and SVG, but like must people I don't know a lot about Elie other than what I saw of him as a player. I think if we are going to take a chance on an unproven coach, we should take a chance on Elston Turner rather than Elie.

I'm pulling for Elie. I like the sound of the type of player, coach, motivator he is. Plus if we could call our coach Super Mario, that would be pretty awesome. lol.

Kings: Carlesimo on Kings' short list

The News
Sacramento has not yet requested permission to interview San Antonio assistant coach P.J. Carlesimo for its vacant head coaching position, but Kings co-owner Joe Maloof told ESPN.com that a request is coming soon. Other short list candidates include Memphis assistant Eric Musselman and Sacramento Monarchs coach John Whisenant.

Our View
Carlesimo has been passed over for coaching jobs the last few seasons and we're starting to wonder if he's going to get another crack at his own team. Whisenant is a personal favorite of the owners, but expect general manager Geoff Petrie to provide the final recommendation for the Maloofs to sign off on.

PJ? no thanks. mussleman? hm...kings could certainly do worse (see PJ). i don't know either carlesimo's or mussleman's anger threshold will withstand a possible artest and/or wells rift. stan van gundy? i could live with that. he'd certainly be the safe choice. john whisenant? pass. our head coach absolutely must have nba experience at some level. i've played competitve basketball for the last 7 years of my life and i've coached inner-city basketball camps the last 3 summers. might as well sign me up to coach the kings.

mario elie? well, what can i say, i'm jumping on his bandwagon. everything i hear about this prospect has become intriguing. and i must admit, after seeing avery johnson's success in dallas, i like the idea of bringing in a young, fiery, hard-nosed coach. mario elie seems to have those qualities, as well as 3 championship rings as a player...not to mention a prior relationship with ron artest. apart from the lack of nba head coaching experience, i see no great risk, but high reward in the areas of defense and motivation, which certainly should translate to wins. SIGN UP MARIO ELIE!!!

Yes. Yay! People agree with me!!! Elie is the best choice, bar none. No Whisenant, no Brown, no Van Gundy... Elie is the one.

Super Mario will help us win the championship.

Or at least find the princess... that girl is always hiding.

He was w/ the Spurs coaching staff before going to Golden State a couple years ago. And, as well as being explained in the Stein ESPN article, was a key player and leader on the Spurs 1999 championship team w/ Avery Johnson. With that, having a similar approach to the game as Avery Johnson as a player, and in turn would go as a coach.

I know about Elie, for what I've stated above. I'd say he fits what the Maloofs want. I wouldn't mind Elston Turner, but his name has barely been mentioned at all since Rick was let go.
