ESPN - The Los Angeles Lakers waived forward Brian Grant on Wednesday, taking advantage of the amnesty clause, a one-time provision to the NBA's new collective bargaining agreement that allows teams to save nearly $30 million in luxury tax penalties.

"The amnesty rule was not in place and thus not a factor when we made the trade which included Brian," said Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak. "However, this is a one-time opportunity to take advantage of this situation, and exercising this will give us greater roster flexibility and the ability to improve our team. We're grateful to Brian for his professionalism and contributions to our team last season and wish him the best of luck with the rest of his career."

Grant was part of the July 14, 2004, trade that sent Shaquille O'Neal to the Miami Heat last July. The Lakers acquired Grant, Lamar Odom, Caron Butler and a future first-round draft pick.

Grant was the Lakers' second-highest paid player after Kobe Bryant and still is owed $29.8 million on his contract.

He averaged a career-low 3.8 points and 3.7 rebounds last season while bothered by chronic tendinitis in his knees. He also had a neck injury in training camp and spent a month on the injured list because of the tendinitis.

The Lakers will have to pay nearly all of Grant's remaining contract, even if the 33-year-old player signs with another team as a free agent. The Lakers will gain no additional salary cap flexibility until after the 2006-07 season, when Grant's contract expires.

By removing Grant's salary from the NBA's luxury tax calculations, the Lakers benefit because the league assesses a dollar-for-dollar penalty for the amount teams spend over the luxury tax threshold, which will be $61.7 million for next season.

What is grant woth now? Maybe 2- 3 mill a year? Or should he just retire? I haven't really seen him play to much the last couple seasons so i really dont know.

his knees messed up, he had a neck injury, hes 33 and to top it all off he averaged 3 points and 3 rebounds in 17 minutes playing time last year... his lowest of his career!

Man i guess its just been too long since i seen him play. Actually i think the last time i really even paid him much attention was when he was with portland. I thought maybe he might be a decent back up PF but nevermind that.

Grant can still handle a spare min against slow footed centers and PF's and will probably get a look from a team in need of size, but I suspect it will be a last min contract.

sucks for the lakers but is good for everyone else, except minny....

when kg demands a trade after not making the playoffs again, the twolves will end up with garbage when they could have traded him to la for grant and mihm. which would both be expiring contracts and would put them dangerously under the slaray cap the next season when wallys albatross of a contract is up....

sucks for the twolves and the lakers.... lol....

"Over the past few weeks, Thorn said he made inquiries about DeSagana Diop, Mikki Moore, Andrew DeClercq, Jake Voskuhl and Dale Davis, and one could argue that Jackson is more valuable than all of them."

"In other words, the Nets are going to back off on their original plans to pursue (Brian) Grant, who was cut by the Lakers Tuesday as part of the amnesty provision in the new collective bargaining agreement."

"There will be roughly a dozen new free agents available Monday, when these tax-saving moves are made. The Nets themselves are likely to waive Ron Mercer."

"In turn, they (the Nets) are expected to vigorously pursue two of the newly-unemployed -- Aaron McKie of the Sixers and Austin Croshere of the Pacers. Of course, that doesn't mean the Nets will ignore Allan Houston if or when the Knicks cut him loose, but that would compel Thorn to look at more MRIs, which has not exactly become his favorite pastime."

I also heard that Austin Croshere of Indianapolis was "Houstoned"...wonder where he'll land. His big contract has really hampered his career. I always admired his game when he was allowed to play. But the knock on him was consistancy so I guess I must have seen all of his good games and not the bad ones.

Really? Are you sure?
If he were released, he would not help the salary situation much there, and besides, he is a productive player.
