Blake Griffin

I really wasn't meaning for this to be another draft discussion thread. ;)

After watching Griffin against Texas Tech, this thread just seemed like the right thing to do.

:)

the problem VF is that I really don't think many of us want to draft griffin regardless of what numbers he puts up. I think he fits the mold of your typical college wonder/NBA role player and that is scaring people. I'd rather take teague or thabeet

This wasn't about drafting him. It was about his most recent performance...

Personally I disagree with your assessment that he fits the mold of anything other than a young man with skills and talents that could translate quite nicely into a really valuable asset for the future.

But again, I was merely recognizing the job he did today... and didn't quite know where else to post it. We could - and have - done a lot worse with lottery picks.

This is just my opinion, but I think that he can be a Boozer type player, except he is 100 times the athlete that Boozer is which is even more of a plus.

How tall is Griffin? Same height as Shelden Williams (#5 overall lottery pick) if not a half inch shorter. I still rate my draft list as follows from earlier post (2/5/09):

1) James Hardin SG (if Rubio available I go w/6'4 Spanish PG phenom)
Surest bet in draft, IMO. 6'5-6'6 smooth lefty, very hard to guard. Can be in the Ginobili lefty mode of instant bench offense, but looks to be a solid defender as well - pesky in your face like Manu. Could probably start in NBA right away, but certainly in a year. Looks good in Kings uni if certain guard/wing players traded beforehand.

2) Hasheem Thabeet C (his stock continues to rise w/me somehow)
I roll my eyes at his zero offensive post moves and lack of passing skill, but he's a legit 7'2-7'3 and Miller will be gone sooner rather than later it would seem. We're going to need a big mobile body to check Oden, Bynum, etc. for next 10 years. He can fill that defensive role very well.

3) Blake Griffin PF (his stock slides a bit as question remains over his height for tough inside NBA competition)
He's not 6'10 as listed almost all say. He may not even be 6'9. I personally think he's around 6'8.75 in shoes - yikes! There's no doubt the dude is a big time stud in NCAA right now. However, in NBA may not translate quite as awesome unless you think he's another Charles Barkley who was listed 6'6 yet only 6'4, still brutalized opposing bigger PF's in the league for over a decade. I'm just not sold as a top 2 pick - maybe 3 or 4.

4-5) I really think Kings will get top 1-3 and not have to worry about 4-5.
Kind of a crap shoot beyond 3 (or 4 w/Rubio) as I see it. If I had to list my faves right now I'd go with J. Hill, G. Monroe, Teague, Jennings.

I am sold on Thabeet. I want him on the Kings. I am starting to see Spencer as a solid back up center and not as the Kings starting Center of the future. I like the idea of a Thabeet/Hawes 1, 2 punch.

I give up. I should have known that this would turn into a draft discussion, no matter what. I still think what Griffin did today was incredible - and it's not a one-time thing. This kid is the real deal, height be damned.

:p

Well, it's in the personnel moves, so of course it's going to be a referendum on whether we should draft him. Truth is, people still have plenty of questions, and his height isn't a small consideration no matter what he puts up.

Jodie Meeks scored 54 points this year but no one is anointing him the next anything. The college game is different than the NBA.

Any questions?

OMG! I remember a couple years ago when that was said after almost every game!

He is impressing me more and more. I would like to pick him and get someone like Wall or Rubio next year (because we will still be in the lottery next year).

And what Thabeet did today was great as well.

No Offense, but when you posed the question of "Any Questions" in the body of your first post it left a little to much to the mind as far as what the thread was really about... I personally saw it posed like that and thought it was a "we should draft him, any questions" presentation :p

Only to newbies. The "Any questions?" thread was a tradition around here for a long time.

I would definitely take Griffin over Thabeet.. Griffin is the consensus #1 so I don't think you are correct in your assumption. Teague is your typical tweener which we do NOT need.. Too short and small for SG, and plays PG only slightly better than Douby :D. Thabeet plays best in a zone which is hit and miss in the NBA. The typical college wonders you speak of are usually your 4 year players like Hansbrough, Harangody, Shelden, and quite a few others.

But not being a draft thread GO GRIFFIN! This kid can flat out ball.

Any questions?

sigh, lol. I was so pumped over THABEAST's performance and was getting up to 99.9 % sure (I'm now only 96 % sure ;) ) that I was comfortable drafting him and then Blake goes and puts up 40/20...

I have a feeling that these two will duke it out until April...

Simply awesome day by the NCAA's two best big men.

Not to totally derail this thread, but can anybody provide links to the box scores on the nights of the threads in question? I'd especially like to see the one on 3/26/06 (AKA Shareef: any questions?).
basketball-reference is one of several where you can do it. Here is a link to the '05-'06 season on their site:

Here is a direct link to the reef one vs. the Warriors, for example:

I retract my Thabeet #1 pick statement. I want Griffin. If we want excitement back in Sactown, we need Griffin. A shoe-in for the dunk contest, that's for sure, and a surefire way to get some national media attention.

Eff undersized, Kings fans seriously need some refreshment. Draft Griffin, go for Session's in FA or trade. I seriously can't name any other PF that's as athletic/powerful (that's a combination, because I'm well aware Josh Smith, etc. are athletic as well) as Griffin.

And for the person that mentioned Charles Barkley, that's EXACTLY who he's reminding me of right now. If only we could bring C-Webb back as a coach...
