Bibby and Barnes Sighting

#1
Tonight in the first game of the Sacramento Professional Developmental League, held at Capital Christian HS in SAC, Mike Bibby and Matt Barnes showed up and put on a show.

The former teammates ran the 2-man game, executed some awesome alley oop-dunk combos, and Mike even drained a 3-pointer only one step past mid-court (note: NOT a buzzer beater attempt). Matt mopped up the boards, had some great finishes at the hole, and drained several 3's. Mike and Matt probably had around 25 points apiece or perhaps a bit more. Their team won 150-something to 110-something.

Just like this year's edition of the Kings, though, there was absolutely zero defense.

Nevertheless, it was still a lot of fun to watch. Just a whole ton of athleticism...something the Kings could use next season.

The league has mostly college and non-NBA pro players from all over the globe. Some very nice looking talent was on the floor tonight. Bobby Jackson and Jerome James are teammates on one of the other squads.

Mike and Matt opposed a team that had ex-Kings Henry Turner and Phil Ricci (training camp only). Ricci looked like a stud...VERY agressive to the hole and even had a few pretty reverse dunks...and he scored somewhere in the 30-35 point range. Thomas looked a bit old and slow. Ricci played in Spain last year and supposedly had a good year.

Anywho, if ya'll want a "bit" of a basketball fix and are within earshot of SACTown, the league will go on every night with one game, tipoff at 7 PM at Capital Christian (just south of US 50 between Bradshaw and Watt), Monday through Thursday, until July 1 when an all-star game will be played against a team from a San Francisco Semi-Pro League.

Thanks for the info, 1kingzfan. Can we expect or hope for regular reports?

;)
Ummm, nope, sorry. I will go to a couple or three more times and then perhaps the all-star game and that's it. I'm going to do a story on the two Oak Ridge High kids that are in the league, and both were no-shows last night. SAC High's Kevin Galloway, dubbed KG by his teammates, played last night and looked pretty good. Quite an athletic kid.

As Marty Mac's piece alluded to, you never know who is going to show up when it's the pros, so you can't count on the Kings being there for every game their teams play. I do think that Matt Barnes will be there most nights when his team plays, though, based on comments he made. There's one game every night Monday to Thursday, so almost every night of the week you can potentially see at least one King in summer league action.

Next time I go, probably next week, I'll try to get back here and give a brief report.

Oh yeah, Bibby got knocked down to the floor pretty hard last night and went flat on his face. He was OK. No call. Just like the NBA regular season! ;)

So is every game at Capital Christian Center?
As far as I know. Perhaps the all star game will be played somewhere else.

If anyone decides to attend, the school gym is way in the back (south) of the property, fairly distant from US 50. The school's address is actually on Micron Drive which parallels US 50 on the south from Bradshaw toward Watt.

Kenny Smith is listed as a player on DMC's team, not THE Kenny Smith ???

Also, on Bibby & Barnes' team...from Iran.... "Circus King". Oh boy...

Thanks for the link 1KF. :)

can we just show up there at game time and pay the $5 entry fee?
Absolutely. There were only about 100 in attendance on opening night.

No crowds or sellouts to deal with. You can sit RIGHT behind the bench where your fav King or ex-King player is sitting. The only negative is that you don't know if the player you came to see will show up that evening to play on his team.

Don't expect to see Bibby there next week (Week of June 13th) as he'll be in Arizona for his basketball camp.

Awesome, college year just ended today for me and I am headed back to SacTown. I went to high school at Capital Christian so I am going to have to check out some games.

The Rise Guys were talking about the league this morning ... in fact, they interviewed Matt .... great interview ... hinted that Ostertag should play and then run extra laps after each game.

Capital Christian is said to be a really nice facility.

and yes .... it's only $5.00 at the gate
