García out a month with bone spur

LAS VEGAS -- The puzzling start to Francisco García's second season has been solved.

The Kings swingman learned Sunday that he has a bone spur on the instep of his left foot, perhaps explaining his lackluster summer-league performance.

García, who stopped early during Kings practice Saturday and later flew back to Sacramento for an X-ray, was relieved that the results were negative. Still, he has been instructed to stay out of action for the next month.

García, who sported a boot on his left leg while watching the Kings beat Toronto 86-79 on Sunday at UNLV's Cox Pavilion, went 5 of 15 from the field in two summer-league games, including 1 of 7 from three-point range.

"I was disappointed in my first game," García said. "I wanted to go out and play my hardest, and I couldn't. The second game was the same thing, so I was like, Man, I can't play like myself, so I figured, Let it get better."

Charity work -- With four to five games per day on the summer-league slate, the Kings have slowed down the action a bit en route to going 3-0, and Kevin Martin is to blame.

The shooting guard has spent loads of time at the free-throw line, including Sunday's 20-for-24 effort as he finished with 27 points. While Martin has had a knack for drawing fouls since his high school days in Zanesville, Ohio, he's been watching video of Miami's Dwyane Wade and apparently is a quick study.

"He's done a great job of lifting, shot fake and jumping into the defender," Kings coach Eric Musselman said. "If he can play like Dwyane Wade, we'll take it. Both are good off the dribble and pretty crafty getting open, too. He's done a great job of drawing fouls."

This is great news. I'll even take a poor man's version Dwayne Wade.
