Attorney Expects Kings' Williams to be Cleared for Home Opener

The attorney for Sacramento Kings backup center Justin Williams expects the police investigation into a reported rape will be over "very, very soon."

Attorney Bill Portanova told News10 he and his investigator have interviewed at least 10 people with knowledge of events leading up to the reported rape at Williams' home following a home exhibition game October 11. Portanova said all the interviews support Williams' claims of innocence.

Portanova said he has shared all of the interviews with police detectives and the district attorney's office, and expects a decision on whether to file charges to come shortly.

A female acquaintance claimed Williams and his girlfriend assaulted her in the bedroom of Williams' Natomas home in the early morning hours of October 12. Williams and his girlfriend insist the sexual encounter was consensual.

Police executed a search warrant at the house five days later. Results of the all-night search have been filed with a Sacramento court, but the file was ordered sealed.

A source close to the investigation told News10 the accuser's underwear and a jacket were found in the home. The source said police were also looking for evidence of a date rape drug based on the accuser's belief she had been drugged.

Neither Williams nor his girlfriend has been charged with a crime.

The Kings have excused Williams from the team while the investigation continues. Williams missed the final five games of the exhibition season and did not travel with the team for the three road games that begin the regular season.

Police spokesman Konrad Von Schoech said detectives are still working on the case and there's no set timetable for them to file a report with the district attorney.

"We're going through the process," Von Schoech said. "Any time you're dealing with a case like this, it gets complicated."

The Kings' home opener is next Tuesday against the Seattle Supersonics, and Portanova said he believes Williams will be exonerated by then.

"I want him to be there opening day," he said.
