According to Michael Lee, the NBA will announce later today that Gilbert Arenas has been suspended for the rest of the NBA season.
Lee reports that Arenas was actually the one to suggest his punishment, and Stern agreed with Arenas' judgement. The NBA Players Association doesn't plan on fighting the decision.

he also asked stern if his contract could be voided because he doesnt want to play for the wizards, stern said that its up to the team. i wonder if he is going to ask grunfeld to void it. i doubt it but it would be interesting and it would give him something to blog about.

Well, I don't know that Gilbert actually would want to have something like $90M voided, but if he DID, and the Wizards did as well, they could easily agree on a buyout without even invoking the morals clause.

The thing is, if the player ASKS to have his contract voided the team in my eyes has absolutely NO reason to PAY him to void his contract.

If the GM wanted to even consider the notion he could just say, OK. Bring a union rep in, with your agent and an attorney, and let's put it down in writing that you wish to have your contract voided, and we will owe $0, and then you're free to go.

Oh, you don't want to give up ALL the money, but you want us to void your contract?? Uhh no.


The whole point of voiding a contract would be to owe NO money.

I don't think anyone would voluntarily give up $90 million, even if he hates playing for the Wizards. I doubt that he would ask them to void his contract when he could probably ask for a 50% buyout and get it.

So another team would be offering Gilbert Arenas a(nother) max contract? I doubt it, especially after all this. Even if they are desperate. I could see five years, $60 million; not five years, $90 million.

We still don't know what his sentencing is going to look like. It's been assumed that he won't do any time, but we don't know yet. I just don't see an NBA player who is owed $90 million over the next five years saying "naw, keep that, I just want to be released," especially with all this nonsense hanging over his head now.

I guess I was in a hurry and didn't articulate that well. Obviously if Arenas wants his contract voided, the buyout would be super, super small. Maybe not $0, but to a first approximation, yeah. Not like 50% of the contract value.

The point I really intended to make is this: As it stands, there's a lot of speculation that the Wizards may attempt to void his contract and the something-like $90M left on it via the morals clause. That would certainly be an ugly, ugly affair - a lawyer-union-media circus and the potential for a public relations debacle for all parties involved. However, if (as speculated in the article) Arenas feels that his relationship with the Washington team/fans is irreparably damaged and he wants out of his contract at a low buyout, voiding becomes a very unpalatable prospect for the Wizards. Avoiding the circus has got to be worth a certain dollar value to the Wizards, and I wouldn't be surprised if that value is over $1M.

But you know what? Re-reading the article, I think it was just poorly phrased. I think Gilbert was actually reported to have asked Stern whether the Wizards might actually have the power to void the contract, not asking if pretty pretty please he can get out of it and all those wads of cash. It's probably a totally moot point.
