SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) -- The San Francisco 49ers traded leading receiver Brandon Lloyd to Washington on Saturday for the Redskins' third-round pick this year and their fourth-round selection in 2007.

Lloyd was a restricted free agent for the 49ers, who drafted him in the third round three years ago. He was San Francisco's top receiver last season, catching 48 passes for 733 yards and five touchdowns, but alienated teammates and clashed with the coaching staff.

San Francisco signed Lloyd to an offer sheet earlier in the month, but Lloyd seemed eager to leave town -- and Washington seems enamored with his highlight-reel skills. He was scheduled to visit the Redskins' training complex Sunday.

Though Lloyd made countless eye-popping catches during his three years with San Francisco, he also made a series of memorable drops and mistakes. Lloyd drew criticism from hard-nosed teammates such as Fred Beasley and Kevan Barlow for his flashy jewelry -- and his aspirations to become a rapper in his spare time.

Lloyd caught 105 passes for 1,510 yards and 13 touchdowns in his three seasons with San Francisco. He also caught rookie quarterback Alex Smith's only touchdown pass of the season in the 49ers' season-ending win over Houston.

The 49ers already released receiver Johnnie Morton earlier in the offseason, leaving oft-injured Arnaz Battle as their most experienced receiver. They're expected to go after free agents, including Pittsburgh's Antwaan Randle-El, and seek more receiving help in next month's draft.

I don't care if the guy is disgruntled.

When he explodes into a top-tier reciever I'm gonna be thuroughly pissed with the franchise.

At this point, I'm not sure I'd object to any kind of trades the 49ers might do. It's not like their roster had any reason to expect anything but change...

Of course you need change with this frnachise, but why do you change one of our lone potential future bright spots?

I hate it.

(That, and Im an admitted Lloyd homer)

Remember, he made catches but he was also responsible for more than his share of incomplete passes that more than once totally killed drives. I can think of at least three that were completely catchable and he failed miserably.

Sorry, SLAB. I'm not a homer of any player on the team. He wants to be elsewhere? Cool. Wave buh-bye. I'm sick and bleeping tired of teams kissing player arse to get them to stick around. He ain't that good...and he is an incommplete pass waiting for the most inopportune time to happen.

Good riddance...he messed me up BIG TIME on my fantasy team last year.

Sigh...He may have been unpolished, but we're not going to get anything better.

Lets look on the bright side...Maybe this will open the door for Rashaun Woods and PJ Fleck...

And another lovley nugget...

The premier WR on the market is the very ordinary Antwan Randle-El.

And according to what I've read, it's a weak draft for WRs.

Way to help improve a weakness.

At least this way the 49ers get something in return. Lloyd was a restricted free agent. He could accept a higher offer from another team and unless the 49ers were willing to match it he would have been gone anyway...

Sorry, SLAB, but there's still SO much wrong with our 49ers that keeping or losing him was not going to mean the difference between success and failure IMHO. I'm actually looking forward to seeing what we can get in the draft.

Brandon Lloyd is not the next Jerry Rice. And even if he was, he certainly wouldn't have the benefit of the supporting cast Jerry had for most of his years.

We're going to have to watch and wait and keep our fingers crossed there's some young talent out there somewhere that can at least help us battle back to mediocrity.

There is a reason the Niners will again be in last place. The only positive thing is that in the NFL you can easily pick up a quality player in FA or the draft. WR is a pretty servicable position.

Lloyd in Washington along side Santana...

Exactly.

Now he has no recieving corps and the very not-good Kevan Barlow and the very fragile Frank Gore.

I know that this single move doesnt make a difference in wins now, but what if Alex goes Ryan Leaf on us because he has no weapons and everything gets in his head.

Thats absolut worst case senario, as I know he;s to smart to do that, but still...Years of pathetic play wont do good for anyones phycee.

actually a third round pick isnt that bad... we got frank gore in the 3rd round and look how his rookie year turned out... i think he was the 3rd leading rookie rusher behind cadillac williams and ronnie brown.....

Yeah, because Smith just lit it up so much last year, right?

If Smith is to shine, he needs someone who WON'T drop key passes. Unless I missed something, Brandon Lloyd may have been the top receiver for the 49ers but that's not saying much, considering who the other WRs were. A pretty much over-the-hill Johnny Morton and an oft-injured Arnez Battle weren't exactly going to the Pro Bowl.

Sorry, but you guys are acting like they just traded away Montana, Rice, and Young...

We're not quite saying we traded away a Rice calibur reciever.

I mean, at least with Lloyd there was some sort of a threat...Now we have nothing...Absolutly nothing...We dont even have that one receiver who MIGHT drop the pass, we have recievers that will drop the pass.

Also, Im enamored with his potential...He's still only 24, and with his ability to make catches like he can when he gets his head on straight he's going to be a major player.

You're assuming he'll outgrow the tendency to drop passes at key times.

;)

I just don't think it's worth getting THAT upset about. When your team is battling for last place in the entire league, you can't be too enamored of any single player.

Eric Johnson will be returning next year...not a huge threat, but a decent option. On a good team he'd be a very good complimentary player. Given the chance, and with a good team surrounding him, I think he'd be a Pro Bowler- he even had a chance last year with the crap surrounding him before he went down.

It's something, at least. I would've liked to seen more in return for Lloyd, but I guess this is a 3 or 4 year rebuilding plan (at which point we're over the cap, and blow it up again)

Ok, I forgot about Johnson...If he's healthy he's a damn-good recieveing tight end.

But with no one else, it'll be easy for opponents to shut him out.

And VF, it really isn't worth getting to upset about...I mean going from 4 wins to 2 wins isn't to bad.

Haha no way he explodes into a top-tier guy. The guy can make some great LOOKING grabs though.

A 3rd and 4th round pick for Brandon Lloyd seems more than fair to me. He has amazing hands, but he's never proven to be great. If he wanted to go its a great deal.

I'm glad I reread it, I was thinking it said 3rd. pick and visions of Bush danced in my head. On second thoughts, my first reading was better;)
We'll be good again one day, I have hope but it could take a while, sigh!

I think Nolan has really adopted the stance that, "If you don't want to be here, we'll get you out" when it comes to disgruntled players. I'm sure in large part, Lloyd was also moved because the club wants bigger, more physical receivers, but I think there was also a message sent here.

More than making moves to improve the club, I think he's trying to make the point that he's in charge and that the team will be built HIS way. Not a bad approach, but you'd better draft well and pick up quality free agents to make it work. Otherwise, giving away Lloyd and Winborn for draft picks seems like a mistake.

The jury's still out on last year's draft. Alex Smith has shown glimpses that he could be a good quarterback, but who knows? This pick will likely make or break Nolan's tenure in San Francisco. I like what I've seen from Gore, and they got some servicable lineman, but nobody that really jumps out at you.

If the Jonas Jennings signing is any indication, Nolan doesn't make the best decisions in free agency either.

I've got very low expectations for this season (especially if the team loses Peterson to free agency as expected) but I want to see some growth. I like Nolan's approach better than Saban's in Miami. Down there they are trying to win now by bringing in veterans while Nolan and company are building from the ground up. Still, I expect the Niners to field a competitive team in 2007 or I won't be the only one calling for Nolan's head.

^^Excellent assessment, IMHO.

I think getting rid of disgruntled players is the right thing to do. If someone isn't happy and wants to be somewhere else, it can affect a whole team. I'm actually going to be looking at the mock drafts, etc. a little more closely than usual. And I'll have my fingers crossed the whole time...

Smith will have plenty of options when the 49ers take Vernon Davis with the #6 pick. Davis is an absolute freak. I hate the 49ers, but you guys should calm down. If Snyder is willing to overpay for one of your players, consider yourselves blessed.
