Breaking News: Davis Has Signed
The 49ers first-round draft pick tight end Vernon Davis signed his contract this morning in time for the team's first practice.
Tune in this afternoon to hear from Davis!
49ers Sign Lawson
The San Francisco 49ers announced Thursday evening that they have signed first-round pick linebacker Manny Lawson.

Lawson (6-5, 240) played in 50 games at North Carolina State, starting 25 times. He finished his Wolfpack career with 196 tackles (125 solos) and 40 quarterback pressures. Lawson also caused five fumbles, recovered four others and deflected seventeen passes. He ranks second on the school’s all-time record with seven blocked kicks and fourth with 20.5 sacks for minus 163 yards.
After signing his contract, Lawson was able to join his team for part of the evening's meetings and will take part in the team's first practice on Friday morning.

Yeah they signed Vernon Davis.. but it's reportedly a five-year, $23 million deal!!!

That makes him the highest paid tight end and he hasn't even played in the NFL yet! Don't get me wrong, he is incredibly talented and has loads of potential but is this really a smart move by the organization?

Sell the Niners back to your brother!!!!

It is hard to understand unless you understand how the NFL Draft works. You have to look beyond the highest payed part.

Vernon Davis was drafted as the #6 overall pick in the draft. The system the Agents and Players have set up through the draft make it so that the contract for a given draft slot is mostly based off of the amount the player got at that spot last year, plus a % increase (of course). It also can vary somewhat depending on what the players drafted immediately before and after that pick sign for and occasionally by position (1st round QB's often bargain harder due to the importance of the position).

The other thing you have to realize is that beyond his base salary and the guaranteed bonuses, a chunk of his contract he will likely never see, because most of these rookie contracts have complicated clauses. For example, he may get x amount if he makes the pro-bowl, x amount if the team makes it to the super bowl, etc

So in 2005 the #6 pick in the 1st round, Adam "PacMan" Jones, signed for 5 years and got $13.5 million in guaranteed money. Vernon Davis was this years #6 and got around $15 mil in guaranteed money.

This is the way the NFL draft works, you can't decide your not going to pay the guy for where you drafted him just because he happens to play TE or another less glamorous position. It is a very clever system the agents and players have in place that guarantees that their client gets a huge deal, because if a team refuses to pay, the agent just has the player hold out. It is also why it is very important for teams to draft well, as otherwise they waste large amounts of money on players that aren't worth it.

York has agreed to huge contracts for Alex Smith and now Vernon Davis. I can only keep my fingers crossed that something good will come from it.

ARGH!! INDEED!! Well at least we have somewhat of a talent base now. Vern is the real deal, saw alot of his games at Maryland, and Manny should be a great replacement for Peterson(and healthy, too). Looking forward to seeing how Larry Allen helps our O-Line. Anyways...Vern is an athletic freak that should have plenty of great NFL seasons for us.
