Washington to host this year's All-Star game
Associated Press
WASHINGTON -- The 2007 WNBA All-Star game will be played in Washington, an official within the league said Thursday.
The league will bring its annual midseason showcase to the nation's capital for the second time, said the official who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because a formal announcement hasn't been made. The WNBA and the Washington Mystics have scheduled a news conference for Tuesday at the Verizon Center.
A sellout crowd of 19,487 -- still the All-Star game record -- watched the West beat the East 81-76 at the Verizon Center in 2002. The game has been played annually since 1999 except for 2004, when the league took a monthlong break to allow players to prepare for the Olympics.
New York has hosted the game three times, including last year's 98-82 win by the East at Madison Square Garden. The game has also been played in Phoenix, Orlando and Uncasville, Conn.
