This draft is kinda weird, looking really top heavy. Vecenie said he is having a hard time finding 30 first round worthy players, at least at this point of the season.

If the season doesn’t turn around and we keep our pick im taking a good hard look at Derik Queen. We will see if I still feel that way at season’s end

CFB and conference realignment has sorta broken MCBB. Blue bloods are losing ground to SEC schools and everyone is wondering wth is going on. Two hall of fame level coaches just quit out of the blue because they can't compete with NIL recruiting. To a certain extent I bet there will be more excitement about prospects in February and March, but the fact that there is even a top 4 or top 5 people feel really strongly about bodes well in general. Keegan's class for example was a 3/4/5 person class but now the #12 guy is an easy top 3 in the class and there is clear talent all over the first round.

When your philosophy for the draft is to always take the best player available, that is going to be 1's and 2's or 2/3 type players a high % of the time
Especially in a guard skill driven league. If you can't dribble and make plays you're likely a role guy unless you're a big man who can switch and be an elite finisher in pick and roll. Then you're probably just a few rungs above.

Possibly.

To me, "BPA". Is dependent on a sliding scale. Like take this past draft for example. If Monte had Devin Carter as his... 5th ranked prospect. And TDS as his 14th ranked prospect. Even though we "need" the wing, I don't think it makes sense for him to pass on Carter with that wide of a delta range between their internal rankings.

Now if Carter was his 12th ranked prospect and TDS was his 14th ranked prospect.. then that's where you can go "against" your BPA principles and take the slight hit in talent and value to prioritize the bigger team need.

People like to say Monte doesn't get our team needs, but if you look at his 2nd round/UDFA profile.. it's literally all defensive wings/bigs with huge physical measurables. Queta, Woodard, Keon, Colby Jones, Isaac Jones, Isaac Crawford. Ramsey is pretty much the only mold breaker there.

Like Marvin Bagley over Luka Doncic?

I had to ;)

Even if we had gone JJJ we would have been a much better team. But Vlade was correct, I believe, that Doncic and Fox would not have co-existed well. Watching the Deebo Fox chemistry certainly at a minimum raises questions.
McNair made the right pick in Haliburton, even though he didn't pair well with Fox. Vlade should have done the same with Doncic, then decided who to trade from there
