DeAndre Jordan - Mavs or Clippers?

Well the big looses here could be the Player's Assassination. The moratorium exists for the player's benefit, now the owners can legitimately go to Silver for a fix by arguing that this is exactly why we can't have nice things. Too bad the Player's Association did not get involved in order to protect their rights... now who is the current president of the NBAPA? Oh yes Chris Paul! What a rat.

It isn't nice to go back on your word, but if what has been reported is true (i.e. his agent pushed him to Dallas, and he realised his mistake and changed his mind to stay with the Clippers), then I guess I can understand what he has done. It might not be the honorable thing to do, but the last thing any team should want is a disinterested, uncommitted player on their roster, and that could have happened if Jordan followed through on signing with the Mavericks. Sure, what has happened hurts the Mavericks and puts them in an awkward position - not good enough to make the play offs or compete for a title, and maybe too good to tank and keep their pick - but they should be able to recover from this. They will have a ton of cap space next year to spend, and if they are bad enough, they will be able to add a high draft pick.

The person I feel sorry for in all of this - and I use that phrase loosely - is Dirk Nowitzki. He has always seemed to be a class act. Has been loyal to the Mavericks and even took a big pay cut to help them rebuild on the fly. Yet, all the Mavericks have done since winning a title is waste what was left of Dirk's prime years. And this is another example of that. Maybe we could try a cheeky trade and grab Dirk from the Mavericks... ;)

IF, if the reports are true he wouldn't return or accept calls then he is simply a wuss, a chicken-crap wuss. If he was going to renege on his word, then man up and just say so.

Agreed. Just read about that part, and as you say, he should have had the guts to speak to them. Unless of course the Clippers confiscated his phone... :D

This is too funny:

  1. Chris Broussard ‏@Chris_Broussard

CORRECTION: Sources: Cuban beside himself. Driving around downtown HOUSTON begging (thru texts) Jordan's family 4 address to DeAndre's home

  2. Mark Cuban ‏@mcuban

.@Chris_Broussard that's is the dumbest crap Ive ever heard. If you had any ethics u would msg me and I will give u his address

Deadspin ‏@Deadspin
Mark Cuban calls ESPN dipcrap Chris Broussard's reporting "ridiculous" http://deadsp.in/jqcp0ox

Chris Broussard ‏@Chris_Broussard
@mcuban if you had the address last night, you would've gone to the house. I stand by my multiple sources who had u calling & texting them

Chris Broussard ‏@Chris_Broussard

Felton
Matthews
Parsons
Nowitzki
Dalembert (?) Stoudamire (?) Kanter (?)

Is that a playoff caliber starting 5?

The Mavs gained Wes Matthews, Villanueva, Barea and draft pick Justin Anderson but lost Tyson Chandler (their defensive anchor), Monta Ellis (arguably their best player last season), and Aminu. They still need to go bargain hunting for a starting center, Nowitzki is a year older, Felton has declined of late and Parsons and Matthews are both coming off substantial injuries. They were the 7th seed last year and I wasn't sure they made the playoffs with DeAndre Jordan. I'm guessing they will miss the playoffs without him.

Golden State
San Antonio
Houston
Los Angeles
Memphis

Barring injuries I see those 5 teams in the playoffs. So three spots with the Thunder, Pelicans, Jazz, Suns, Kings, & Mavs battling it out.

I'm guessing Oklahoma City, Sacramento and New Orleans

I'm not huge on schadenfreude but Wes Matthews using the Kings as leverage in his goal to sign with the Mavs only to have Sacramento make the playoffs and Dallas in the lottery (where Boston gets their draft pick if it's 8th or higher) would be a nice bit of karma.

DJ just should have gone through with his Mavericks decision. Keeping your word means doing things even when you don't feel like it. Jordan has a lot of responsibility in this mess.

the nba is a grown man's league. it's not a place for this kind of behavior. i don't care one iota if dan fegan "pushed" for deandre jordan to end up in dallas. jordan needs to be able to take responsibility for his own future. the team an nba free agent decides to play for is perhaps the biggest decision they can make in a professional basketball setting. it affects their income in specific ways. it affects their family in specific ways. it affects their on-court performance in specific ways. it affects their future contracts in specific ways. this is simply not a situation where you can cry foul that "my agent made me do it!"

to make such a huge decision without recognizing its impact on both your immediate future and your long-term future is flat-out irresponsible. the nba has functioned with a "handshake agreement" mindset during free agency's moratorium for many years precisely because, no matter the quality of the player or the merits of their decision, free agents almost always take enough care to determine that they've made the decision they want to make. they deliberate with their agents, with their families, with their friends, with their posses and hanger-on's, and with themselves. lebron's "The Decision" moment was undoubtedly a lowlight of his career, but he was clearly a grown-ass man who was faced with a grown-ass decision. he was conflicted about leaving his hometown fans for miami, but he owned that decision fully, just as he did once again when he returned to cleveland last offseason. deandre jordan's "Indecision" moment has exposed a rather large flaw in the system; there's no accounting for the unpredictability of immaturity. but the nba will surely attempt to account for it in the future so that this incident doesn't repeat itself...

all of that said, i still think the clippers behaved in a deeply unprofessional manner. i can understand their sense of urgency under these circumstances, but it reflects so poorly on them as an organization to fly out to deandre jordan's home after a verbal agreement was already reached with another team, bunker themselves there until jordan agreed to re-sign, and then flat-out circumvent jordan's agent in negotiating a new contract. say what you want about the distinguished layer of sleaze that covers every power agent in the league, they exist to broker deals between players and teams, and dan fegan--slimy though he may be--brokered a deal between deandre jordan and the dallas mavericks. it's not fegan's fault that jordan couldn't make a decision for himself, or couldn't just tell his agent, "i disagree. this is what i want. make it happen." the agent works for the player, after all. and then, to top it off, the clippers contingent decided to play cards together after their deal was struck! like this was business as usual! bad form all around...

The one question I have about Fegan was how much he drove the narrative that Chris Paul hates him home to Jordan to close the deal to Dallas. Because apparently Chris Paul getting in his ear and kissing and making up had a large part to do with his change of heart.

I suppose the other part of it was that Fegan apparently is really good friends with Cuban so he was doing Cuban a solid by pushing his talent to Cubes.

Also curiously it was pointed out that the Warriors won their title this year without a single Fegan client, and that was by design due to prior difficulties working with Fegan. Knowing that and that Vivek was formerly involved in that ownership group and has close ties, and everything he has done to manipulate the Cousins situation, it really makes you go hmmm.

In the end Jordan has to live with this and it isn't going to be pretty. I know I have never been a Boozer fan because of the stunt he pulled, and I'd be weary 10 seasons from now if Jordan was rumored to come to Sac. Fegan will wash his hands with no repercussions.

He's not even worth all this drama.
He is. I don't like him and I don't think he is a good basketball player, but he may be the best rebounder in the league, alters a lot of shots, explodes to the basket out of the pick&roll and can run the floor. Like it or not but he will be one of the best centers in the league until his athleticism starts to decline.

Mark Cuban ‏@mcuban
@Chris_Broussard how about this. You post any proof I was calling/texting his friends asking anything I give 100k to charity of yr choice.

I can see this ending bad for Broussard... I don't think Cuban will let it go.
Hours after Mark Cuban detailed his day leading up to DeAndre Jordan snubbing the Mavericks to return to the Clippers, Chris Broussard apologized for not contacting the Mavericks owner before tweeting a report that he was driving around Houston desperately looking for Jordan’s address.

Regarding my Wednesday report: I should have attempted to contact Mark Cuban before reporting what my sources were telling me. I always try to carry myself with honesty and integrity both personally and professionally. I recognize that I tweeted hastily, I’m sorry for it, and I will learn from my mistake.
