If I have this right, he'll not get claimed on waivers, then we will offer him a free agent contract. But how much can we even offer?

I've already determined there is zero chance we don't sign him. That's probably wrong.

Why would Smith sign here for the minimum over, say, Memphis for the minimum, or Los Angeles (Clippers) for the minimum?

If there's any team in the league that should be making a full-court press for Smith, it might be New Orleans.

Not sure why so many think we have the best shot at him. Sure we covet him the most for some reason, but because of the way the waiver works there's no way anyone is going to claim him and eat some of that salary. Which means he'll be free to go wherever he wants. I bet a contender takes a chance on him. We'd have to overpay him to get him here.

Good to hear that the Clippers and Mavs can't really pay him. Sounds like Houston and Kings are it if he wants moolah

How much money can we offer? It may come down to that.

I tend to agree with posters who say there's no reason he would sign here over many other much better teams that will surely make offers.

If he clears waivers he wont be a King. Pistons will still pay his huge contract and he can rehabilitate his image on a contender. We can offer the biggest role though as the starting 4.

Someone needs to put Vivek in the corner for awhile on timeout.

Enough is enough. An owner who knows next to nothing about basketball should not be at the forefront of player personnel decisions and acquisitions.

I just keep seeing it similar to the draft video. In their meetings, Vivek just keeps repeating "Josh Smith" until eventually everyone convinces themselves he's their choice too

I'm confused about one thing - I know if a player clears waivers, his next contract is offset against the original team's cap - but does the original team still have to pay his salary??

Ie, Smith is owed $14mm. Let's say he signs for $2mm. Does that mean that he makes $16mm total, or does it mean the Pistons only pay him $12mm (so his take home would be the same)?

If it's the latter, the money offered to him would be literally irrelevant to him, aside from ego

I am not sure WHY Josh would pick the Kings over other teams at Vet min, but heck at vet min money he is way worth the risk. Maybe this is Van Gundy's way of saving PDA from him self.

I was waiting for someone to say this.

The fact is that the Kings WERE NOT willing to give up anything of value nor sacrifice cap space to acquire Josh Smith. This is why he is on waivers now. Yet of course this is a sure sign that the FO is terrible and likes Smith too much and will drive us into the ground and is worse than the M*****s. Because reasons.

I think offering Smoov a chance to play next to Cuz and Gay would be some incentive. He might think that Sac is the best fit for his career after seeing what happened with Rudy. That would be the only chance

This. We can offer him far more playing time than a contender as well as the potential to replace JT in the starting line-up. Maybe he feels that playing next to Cuz will be an ideal fit for him as well to resurrect his career, similar to what happened to Gay.

Personally, i think if we can get him on a minimum (or close to minimum) salary for a short term, then roll the dice. If Corbin is the coach all season, then this season may just be a wash anyways, why not give him a shot. But i do NOT want to see him get locked up for numerous years like Travis Outlaw, that's for sure
