Trade Bibby, but not for Iverson

First-time posting, long-time lurking...

For all he brings to the team on offense (current shooting woes notwithstanding), Mike Bibby is our most glaring liability on defense. (Miller's a close second with his lack of quickness and jumping ability.) The combination of Bibby and Miller on the defensive end is embarrassing. Bibby's weakness was less obvious when we had Bobby Jackson and Doug Christie to cover for him. And Miller's weakness was less obvious in the Adelman system. Bibby's career will flourish on a team where his weakness can be minimized. So why not trade him now? But for Iverson? - a player who is notorious for NOT making his teammates better? Nah, that's like 3rd down and 2 yards and you throw the bomb! Provides for a little excitement, but doesn't get you where you need to go. But... how about turning over the PG duties to a combination of Price and Hart, then trade Bibby and one particular undersized PF for an athletic, shot-blocking PF? Personally, I think Price is 1-2 years away from being another KJ, but not ready (yet) to be our full-time PG.
Suggestions on a Bibby + KT for PF trade, anyone? I think their combined salaries are ~ $18-$19 million.

Welcome to the board! Always glad to see a lurker finally take the plunge...

Are you familiar with realGM trade checker? It's a marvelous tool for determining whether or not a trade you think of might actually work:

As far as salaries go, your best source is:

I think our main problem isn't going to be at this end. The problem will be finding a team willing to take on Kenny's contract with Bibby.

:)

Wait...we are trading away Bibby on the assumption that Price is the next KJ?

Yeah, I know. A wee bit early to make that assumption. I just stuck my neck out there for you to take a swipe at. Enjoy it while you get the chance!
But I do think he's our future PG.
Packaging Bibby and KT is probably the ONLY way we're going to unload KT and also improve in a big way at the PF spot. That would make Miller our only defensive weakness. So that's where I'm coming from.

look, trading away bibby isn't going to change much. We're not very good and we're going to remain bad. At best we're a low seeded playoff team with not much chance of moving on. IF trading bibby helps develop a better team it's worth it. There is no point of staying this rut of mediocrity

Trading away Mike Bibby could be HUGE! I think what jcassio is looking for is some ideas of what teams might be interested in a Bibby-KT trade deal to try and get us a better player at the 4.

yup pretty much

our first wall of defense... bibby

and our last line of defense... miller

Suck...

if we can a decent deal for bibby, for sure or just wait till the end of this season...

While I don't rah-rah players, I will admit to being a Bibby fan. I'll also admit that with the current state of the team and the impending state of his contract it may be time to see him off. I'm ok with the Iverson deal if it nets us some other players besides AI to help us defensively but lets just assume its not going to happen.

Another team which has made no secret about wanting AI is the Celtics but they just haven't been able to get a deal done. It seems Philly wants more than Boston will give - Al Jefferson, Gerald Green, Telfair, Ratliff and a #1 pick with Green being the apparent deal killer.

Bibby is no AI but he is a solid PG who can score and would give the Celts the double threat with Pierce they're looking for and Jefferson is a player we could use. Wonder what could be worked out around that scenario?

As an added personal bonus I could still root for Bibby on my #2 team.

eta: Checking things over I see Ratliff still has 1 year after this one.
I checked Real GM and we could do Bibby and Garcia for Ratliff, Jefferson and either Telfair or West.

Now you're jsut stealing my stuff. ;)

Although in my version I saw no reason to give up Garcia -- we're at a different point now and its time to pile up youth, not use it as throw ins.

Ok...can we please have some rebuilding plans that aren't centered around relying on Kevin to become the next MJ and score 30 a night or Ronnie Price to become the next Kevin Johnson and go 20-10 for us for the next dozen years?

Please?:(

I figure the Celtics will want something besides just Bibby... but maybe not. Garcia seems to be the odd man out right now so yeah, I threw him in. Fancy that, we agree on something?

Where did I say anything about Kevin being the next MJ? Nor am I suggesting that Price will go 20-10 for us for the next dozen years. Hello?
The suggestion of trading Bibby to improve our interior defense is the point.

Martin McNeal (12/14/06): That's Sacramento's true need: a big, quick, athletic frontcourt player capable of erasing defensive perimeter mistakes.

...Jefferson is a player we could use.

Absolutely. Al Jefferson may be exactly what we need. But he may be a year or two away from the player I'd like to have at the PF spot this year - especially if we're going to trade Bibby in the process. Still, if we could get him without picking up a bunch of deadwood in the process, I'd go for it.

If we keep Bibby (at least for the rest of this season), I fully expect he will pull out of his shooting slump. But he'll still be our biggest liability on defense without a shotblocker.

bibby's defense is atrocious and without a defensive big, bibby's defense is even worse. actually a lot of point guards have problems staying in front of other PGs as well. perimeter slashing types are harder to guard with the rules right now. the key really is for someone in the kings front office to realize that there are inside players taller than 6'7"-6'9" that are capable of blocking and playing defense. if we get a good defensive big, we can hide bibby's weakness (and keep his offense) or better yet send him out get a somewhat quality big and use price and salmons (or douby in the future) for our PG. Al Jefferson is intruiging. Theo is a proven shot blocker.
