I can’t wait to find out,” Walton said after the Kings opened training camp with a morning workout Tuesday at the team’s practice facility. I think everyone wants to see the three guards on the court together and see what that looks like. There are groupings of an Alex Len protecting the rim with Davion getting into the ball and Moe Harkless on the wing, that type of group I want to see, too, so there’s a lot that we’ve talked about as a staff, but we’ve got to see it in action on the court.

Shoutout to Tristan for always keeping everything light around here and bringing a lot of energy,” Kings forward Harrison Barnes said. I think guys really feed off that and maybe that’s what we’re about this year, just continuing to look inward for motivation, look inward for positivity and build each other up. The Kings acquired Thompson, 30, in August in the three-way trade that sent Delon Wright to the Atlanta Hawks.

Walton will likely start De’Aaron Fox at point guard, Tyrese Haliburton at shooting guard and Richaun Holmes at center with Harrison Barnes at small forward or power forward. Walton’s decision may come down to whether he wants to start Buddy Hield in a three-guard set or Marvin Bagley III in a more traditional lineup. Both are suspect defenders, but Hield would give the starting unit better shooting and spacing while Bagley would provide more size and rebounding.

Kings point guard De’Aaron Fox was a runaway winner as the fastest man in the NBA and Davion Mitchell was tabbed as a leading candidate for Rookie of the Year in the 20th annual NBA.com GM survey. A resounding 59% of NBA general managers identified Fox as the fastest player with the ball in his hands. That certainly wouldn’t be enough for the Kings to secure one of six automatic playoff bids in the Western Conference, but it would probably make them one of the last two teams in the play-in tournament. The Kings could be a little better or worse depending on injuries — and a big trade could change everything — but for now I’m predicting a competitive play-in race involving some combination of the Kings, Memphis Grizzlies, New Orleans Pelicans and Minnesota Timberwolves. Reason for optimism?

Kings coach Luke Walton has gone a step further, looking back in time to compare his rookie guard to one of the most fearsome defenders the league has ever seen.
