Rick Adelman our GOAT - RIP

This was such sad news. As I’m unfortunately recovering from hip replacement basically stranded in the bed hahaha I grabbed my phone and saw this and I shook. I ,like so many hundreds of you, thought back to all the wonderful, fun , and unforgettable times as a die hard Kings fan since 1986. RIP Rick Adelman. Best coach ever

In Adelman's 5-year stretch between '00-'01 and '04-'05 he went 75 games over .500, which for 5-year stretches with the same team, appears to be the 16th-best *non-overlapping 5-year coaching record in NBA history.

*Meaning if a coach had a very solid 6-year run, you don't get to count years 1-5 and years 2-6 as separate stretches.

Obviously the greatest Kings coach but also one of the greatest of all time. He is one of the very few coaches throughout history who you knew could maximize the ability of just about any player. He could find a productive role for them. You knew you were getting your moneys worth with Adelman.

Not to mention the trust he put in his players. The rare hybrid of a great X’s and O’s coach, a rotation and game manager and a players coach. Usually you’re one or the other.

Jason Williams said Rick was the only coach that let him be him. You may notice after he left Sac, JWill became less flashy and more traditional. That’s why a guy who had a solid career that lasted over a decades highlight vids are all from his first 3 season. Other coaches won’t give a guy that kind of rope. Especially a young player. But Rick knew that flashiness, even if a behind the back pass landed in the third row sometimes, was a code of energy not just for Williams, but for Webber, Vlade, Peja, etc and equaled wins and excitement for the Kings

Kings fans have gotten used to missing Rick Adelman for 20 years now, but now he’s really gone.

RIP

Used to work for a Hyatt down in Newport Beach as a server. He came in one time with his wife and was just sitting in the lobby. I went up to him to say hi and he got a real kick out of a random life-long Kings fan being in Orange County or that someone even recognized him. Super nice and gave me a few minutes of his time when he really didn't have to.

RIP to a legend.

Was thinking through this a bit more and I think one testament to how special that team really was that Adelman/Coachie/Petrie put together is how those guys still are relating back to Sacramento. Christie HC. Bibby HC at Sac State. Bobby J Ast coach. Vlade and Peja have held FO jobs. Brad chugging beers court-side at home games. C-Webb always talks fondly of Sacramento. As much as we fans yearn for those glory years, I think those guys in a lot of ways do too. They knew how special that team was.

Another fond memory of Rick that will remain with me for quite a while was when they brought all of the legends back for the very last game in the old barn (2016)...Yes, many of the greats got a rousing ovation from the crowd, but man...When Grant introduced Rick Adelman...It immediately took me back to the early 2000s, and those playoff crowds...Yes, it actually was THAT loud in that very moment.

What a lovely tribute in a way only Capt. Factorial could. 🤣

Rick Adelman's tenure as head coach of the Kings and the passion that those 9 years engendered in a Sacramento fanbase desperate for any whiff of success is partly responsible for the Kings continuing to exist in Sacramento and us continuing to exist as an online community. He was the gold standard all other coaches are measured by for the first 40 years of Sacramento Kings basketball and probably will be for quite a while longer.

I'll take this as an excuse to re-post my favorite Rick Adelman moment -- his fist pump celebration after Kevin Martin's game-winning layup over the Spurs in the 2006 Playoffs. I cued it up to the end of the clip... but feel free to rewind if you want to re-live the full final minute in all its glory (trigger warning -- there will be Maloofs in the post-game celebration footage).

The late Marty McNeal with a great reaction to the shot as well.

RIP to Rick Adelman, the greatest coach in Sacramento Kings history.

Forever grateful to have watched his masterpiece, The Greatest Show on Court, in my lifetime. Like him, there will never be another.
