Interesting Theory

A friend of mine and I were talking the other day about the pending Adelman re-signing or not. He thinks that if Adelman is not re-signed that George Karl will be the coach of the Kings next year. A tough minded coach. It's no secret that some players aren't happy with Karl in Denver and Karl is not happy in Denver right now.

Do you think this would be a good move or bad?? Discuss.

I like Karl, but I would still take Adelman over him. I really hope Adelman wants to come back, I have my doubts, but I think Petrie could convince him to. Then there is the question of whether the Maloofs want Adelman back or not.

If Adelman is not resigned or he declines to resign, I think Karl would be a solid coach for this team.

good move, look how he turned Denver around last season
I would hesitate to give Karl much credit there. Kiki took a lot of risks over the preceeding 3 years to get a top draft pick in Mello AND have lots of cap space jsut when the FA market was flush brining in tons or tallent. Karl inherited a young tallented team that had only a little experience with eachother. If the best option for a replacement is Karal... I'd keep RA.

If I remember correctly when Karl came to the team last year, Denver was playing like ***, and they did a 180 almost as soon as Karl stepped in.

George Karl might be adequate - barely - but I still have a bad taste in my mouth over the whole Olympics performance last time around.

If the Kings get rid of Adelman, I would personally rather see them promote Elston Turner who would be in the vein of Adelman but with a little more leeway about rotations and a lot more defensive focus.

Good call, ET is a stud.

I am on the ET bandwagon too, if RA does not return. I think he has what it take to be a head coach and his defensive focus will help this team a lot. Ron would like that focus as well, and I think he would be fine with ET. I doubt we'd keep him out from under the camera lens if Karl were the coach. Call it a hunch.

From what I've heard all the unemployed coaches besides Stan Van Gundy(who doesn't want to coach anymore) are bad and they're not coaches who would mix with our players anyways. I agree with VF that we should give Elston a chance if Adelman isn't here next year. Isn't he supposed to be good anyways?

Why are people so high on Elston Turner? He's been the defensive-specialist coach on a team that couldn't play defense to save their lives until Artest arrived. What makes people think he'd be a good head coach?

Terry Porter!

Last night on ESPN, Steven A. was saying he is hearing talk out of Sacramento that the Maloofs are looking to possibly go in a different direction, and could be looking for a higher profile coach (who??? Larry Brown?). I'm 50/50 on guessing whether or not Rick is returning, but will the Maloofs want to pay him what it will take to bring him back?

i like stan van gundy & elston turner IF adelman gets the boot. adelman hastaken this team w/ alot of injuries and still got them to play at a high level.. (w/ the exception of this year)
i am against getting george karl and larry brown. keep those suckas off the kings. george karl and larry brown always alienate their teams.

im for keeping him... but i dont want to end up with a coach that has too much of a focus on defense since we dont have a player that can get his without hesitation..... if this team had a true go to player then yeah but since we dont....

Who knows what'll happen in the Summer though, Ariesmar. I think we're fine on offense, but suggestions have been to getting Jamal Crawford and Ray Allen, lately. Both excellent, versatile offensively. Just got big contracts, but I'd take one of them on.

George Karl is in no way an upgrade over Rick Adelman, in fact, rep, or acheivement, and unlike Rick, has the additional negative of being a mini-Larry Borwn who inevitably alienates his star players. That would be boneheaded.

That said, I have a hard time seeing the Maloofs sucking it up and putting their big $$ long contract confidence in Rick again. So I think they will be looking for a change. Fact is however that the grass is not always greener. Silas? The Van Gundy Bros? Solid coaches all. But which among them exactly has come closer to a title than Rick? Brown after his mega-dollar Knicks debacle? Wilkens in his absolute lottery team dotage? Don Nelson, who is WORSE than Rick in the ways we theoretically want to improve, and is absolutely notorious for never coaching his teams in a way that can lead to a title?

Here's a name for you -- Rudy Tomjanovich? Horribly overrated, pseudo-fired by our rivals down south, but at least with the dissipating reek of championshups behind him?

Or...Coach K? Take the ultimate college coach risk?

I would throw up if Coach K came here, but fortunately that will not happen. He has had many opportunities to jump to the NBA, including the Lakers reportedly waving big bucks in front of him before Phil came back. He is comfortable being an icon at Duke and competing for NCAA championships every year.

Anyway, the coaching situation is certainly going to be a big problem heading into the offseason and could have a big effect, along with FA/Draft, on whether we rise back up to the top or wallow in mediocrity once again. No one stands out to me as being the one I want coaching our team. I wouldn't touch Silas, Brown, Wilkins, or Nelson for sure. Rudy T or Stan Van Gundy are at least somewhat intriguing, but I don't think are a good fit.

Well, these are the same people that are giving Adelman credit for the teams turnaround instead of Artest.

I've yet to see a single person give credit to Coach Adelman instead of Ron Artest. On this message board or anywhere else.

In my opinion, giving either one of them full 100% credit for sparking the team's resurgance would be equally ignorant.

As would DENYING that either Artest or Adelman had a great deal to do with the turnaround.

If in fact RA is gone after this year, a coach that I think would be a perfect fit here is P.J. Carlesimo. If he could bring a style similar to that of San Antonio here with our players, I think we would be in great shape!

Nothing better than hiring a complete ******* who once got choked by one of his own players to coach Ron Artest (and maybe Bonzi).

Elston Turner may be untried, but I'd take a chance on him over any of the overated re-treads that have been bandied about: George Karl...Don Nelson...P.J. Carchokio...

Elston is a total crapshoot though. He's really shown absolutely nothing as an assistant coach. Be hard to imagine us turning this whole thing over to just a nameless non-impact assistant and jsut crossing our fingers.

I'm going to disagree just a little, Brickie, about Elston. I think he does more than is generally acknowledged. And, out of curiosity, what would make him an impact assistant?

Yeah, everyone knows about what happened in the past, but I just can't believe that sitting next Greg Popovich for all of these years hasn't taught Carlesimo anything. Besides after watching the Kings blow a 17 point halftime lead, at home against the Suns, while the coach was hard pressed to show any emotion, maybe a "complete *******" wouldn't be such a bad idea. A guy with some fire in his belly my prevent the flat starts to seemingly every 3rd quarter. I like RA, I like what he has done for this team and if he's not going to be here, I think we need to go after a coach that is going to put an emphasis on defense. And besides, it's not like George Karl didn't pack his share of controversy on his way to Denver.
