And the theme will of course be: Kings Triple Doubles

You know what are handy for these type things BTW? The media guides they hand out to season ticket holders. All kinds of handy statistical information on the franchise. My last one was from the Muss year, but fortunately so far as I can tell, that was also the last year anybody in a Kings uniform had a triple double...until now. They should really put all that stuff online somewhere, although then I guess you couldn't use the guide as a little season ticket holder bonus. In any case, here we go:

Boxscore

Greene ( B+ ) -- this was a night for our guards, but you know what? Donte was quite good in support and badly outplayed the chubby ghost of Hedo. Started the game active but missing two tip attempts after a Landry miss. Then came up with a spectacular reverese layup. Another strong drive, but came up short, got the o-reb, and finished. In the 2nd hit the jumper on the Reke draw and kick. Missed the layup on another drive. Amazing flip +1 on the baseline high up over the backboard and in. Was on the glass in the first half. In the 3rd canned the corner three on a Beno kickout to cap a 10-0 run to start the 3rd. Airballed a three off the right side, but raced downcourt to get back and block Hedo's raceout attempt. Nice drive and dish to Landry. Drained the jumper on the kick from Beno. Good drive right and finish off the galss. Great open court hustle steal along the sideline, got the ball to Beno, got it back for the flying finsih attempt, but took the hard foul for the flagrant. Hit 1 of 2. In the 4th missed the side three and then took the rest of the night off with a blowout brewing and various minutes games being played. Really strong support effort.

Brad Miller 17pts 10rebs 11ast (4/10/07) -- I suppose I should start with the most recent one. Yep, it was Brad almost three years ago now in a meaningless end of the season game against Memphis. One of three triple doubles in his career, all with the Kings. Boxscore

Landry ( C+ ) -- got off to what could kindly be called a slow start -- as in 2pts 1reb before half slow. Then blew up with the rest of the team in the insane third quarter to finish wiht a respectable 15pts 6rebs line. Aggressive take but missed the point blank layup to start. Forced a jumper against the clock that bricked. Forced the post move and airballed it. Was sitting on 0-5 by the end of the first quarter. Started the second missing another turnaround. Finally got the dunk just before half from Hawes. Nothing on the glass in the first half either. Guess the one thing you could say was that Bosh was sturggling back the other way nearly as badly, but how much of that was due to Landry is fairly questionable. The third quarter was thankfully another story. Started off with an offensive rebound and finish off a Hawes miss. Layup off a nifty Reke drive and kick. Nice patient little post spin over the trees. Layup from Greene. But beat back the other way by Bosh for the +1. Jumper on a Reke dropoff. Fumbled a pass from Beno for a turnover. Was back for a bit inthe later 4th as we put it away. Got a side jumper from Reke. Fouled and to the line, missed the first, hit the second. Closed with a missed jumper. 15pts 6rebs and its hard to call this much more than an adequate game, but even with the struggles was up to .500 by the end of the night, and ended up with better numbers than Bosh, who was just lousy. So not too bad a grade.

Kenny Thomas 16pts 12reb 10ast (01/19/06) -- and of course you all know who had the last triple double before Brad -- it was only the most famous triple double in franchise history. Kenny "The Man's Man" Thomas, in the weeks before the Artest trade, against the Lakers, sees them try to guard him with Luke Walton, and beasts on him. Pretty beastie game overall. The Man goes for a triple double. Bibby dropped 40. Kobe dropepd 51 back the other way. But when it came winning time, you know where we turned. And Kings win baby! Boxscore

Hawes ( C+ ) -- bad pass TO to start, little flip finish off a a Reke drive and dish. Beat by both Bosh and Bargnani early. Found Beno for a corner three against the clock. Missed the long jumper, then missed the tip. Finished the half with a nifty spin dish to Landry inside for the dunk. Unfortunately was really flatfooted on defense and the glass all half long as we were having our normal problems defending the rim. In the third missed the little hook on the the pick and roll. Rolled again and finished through contact +1. Nice up and under along the baseline. Was better after half on the glass. Kind of a forgotten game operating behind the blazing backcourt, and getting worked by Bargnani in the first half is prety emasculating, even if you have anything to emasculate. But by the end had a respectable statline going. Now if we could just replace that respectable statline with something big, strong, mean and ugly in there we could have something going here.]

Chris Webber 29pts 15rebs 11ast (01/15/03) -- the year was 2003, we were at our absolute peak, and it was the last time this franchise had a true superstar at its head. And he always owned Dallas. Saw the softness that was Dirk and his eyes just lit up. Ironically it would be a few months later against this same Dallas team that his knee exploded, and his, and our future suddenly grew dim.

Udrih ( A ) -- now I have an informal poilcy about A+s -- there can only be one a game. I hand them out only for dominant absolute "I am the man" games that we win, or for major career milestones/acheivements. But let it be understood that Beno was really really really good tonight. Borderline brilliant. And while the Raptors could not stop Tyreke either, they are not the first team this year that has screwed itself spending so much effort trying to stop Reke that they just throw a single weaker defender on "that other guy" while he proceeds to light them up. And Beno did light them up. Was scorching from the very start. First stop and pop barely even brushed the net it was so pure. Got a charge called on him running over Derozan on the drive. But then drained a corner three from Hawes, sliced through the Raptors defese for a layup, drained another side three from Reke., drove left and hit another stop and pop, and was just scorching onj his way to a 5-5 first quarter until he took the rebound and went full court for the long miss at the quarter buzzer. In the 2nd started with a great change of direction drive, but blew the layup. Had another change of pace drive for the layup to close the first half. Opened the third with a bad pass turnover in the open court, but then heated up again. Drained another corner three. Drove and wildly kicked to Donte for the jumper. Forced up a jumper through contact, and even it went in. Another stop pop and hit. Finally missed a jumper near the end of the quarter. After Donte stole the ball, he dished it to Beno, and Beno dished it right back to Donte for the flying finish attempt that resulted in a flagrant foul. Drive and dish to May. Closed the qaurter with a final stop pop and drain as we poured in 43 points in the period -- more than the entire first half. Minutes in the 4th were limtied as we started mixing in bencheers, then belatedly realized we wanted Reke to get his minutes too. Missed a single driving layup, but got a foul called and hit the FTs. Big hot shooting night. Just so happens to be paired with one of the ultimate thunder stealers in the NBA right now.

Chris Webber 14pts 17rebs 12ast (02/13/05) -- it was early 2005. Webb was coming off being awarded Player of the Month in January when he delviered this, his third triple double in the space of a single WEEK (the others being 24-10-12 on 2/8/05 and 20-13-10 on 02/05/05). It would be the final one of his 14 triple doubles in a Kings uniform, as he was abruptly traded a week later for "flexible pieces". Boxscore

Evans ( A+ ) -- having a superook is damn fun. We should have done this years ago. Bargnani twice slipped in front of him an 0-reb to start -- not sure how he ended up having to try to check him. Spin drive along the baseline and finished through traffic +1. Power drive but flip finish off the rim. Rocked into the jumper and off -- his scoring being off recently has nothing to do with the various amazing drives, and everything to do with getting almost no points off the jumpers and losing points at the line the last month. But was on the glass early as it was obvious from early on that this might be a good night for the ole 20-5-5. Forced a drive -- should have kicked and may have been a little amped to start. Was playing strong defense on Derozan, who has had his moments as a rookie, but just got beat like a drum by a far superior beast in this one. Drive and kick to Udrih for the three. In the 2nd beat across the middle by Calderion as he got run into a pick. Fouled on the turnaround jumper in the post, and split the pair. Strong one handed finsih right should have been called a foul. Another rocking jumper miss. Beautiful spinning drive and kick to Cisco for a three -- think Cisco just yelled for it loud enogh that Reke heard it, because I have no idea how he saw him otherwise while spinning through all that traffic. Draw and kick to Donte. Amazing Sportcenter shot over the backboard +1, but missed the FT. Another beautiful spin drive but missed the layup. Played some strong defense forcing an airball late in the half. Started the 3rd with a great drive and dump pass to Landry. Just bulled right through Derozan for a layup -- continues to make me chuckle at the way he just physcially overwhelms guys. Just a hoot to watch, and he's just a kid. What's it going to look like in 5 years when he's got guns like LeBron? Could be the most fun to watch in the entire NBA. On the break, a again a bang + power finisih +1, and even made the FT. Another drive into the teeth of the defense and flipped it in. Little dropoff to Landry for the jumper. Drove and tied up for the jumpball. Almost got screwed by his coach in the final period, as wiht the Raptors teetering on the brink and Reke threatening a triple double on his night he should have been in there to start the 4th, where he would work toward his numbers while the game was still afoot rather than in the blowout. Missed a three after returning, but for the first few mintues the scrub linuep was playing keepaway with the ball from him. After a timeout in mid quarter, came back with a feed on the break to Cisco for a layup, then a dish to Landry for the side jumper. With time getting short, grabbed a d-board, his 10th, and got out on the break and scored for 19-10-9. Then next time down the floor the dump pass to Cisco was hit for the 10th assist. It was a close thing. It was a little manufactured -- it should be noted, and was by Sam Amick who seemed pissy about the whole thing BTW, that assist #9 felt a little bit like those assist Curry and Collison seem to be getting from their home scorers -- a pass to Cisco, who dribble drove for the layup. But there it was nonetheless. And BTW, while I may be missing somebody recent, as this next triple double will show, I think Reke is one of the youngest players ever to get one in the NBA. It should never be underestimated just how hard it is for a 20 year old to be doing the things he is doing. LeBron was 20yrs old +1month when he became the youngest player ever to record a triple double. Reke is 20 yrs old + 6 months. Which rouhgly translated means he's doing things at his age that only a tiny tiny handful of players have ever done. And so for hsi first, of many, triple doubles, here comes the A+. Congrats kid.

Mike Bibby 17pts 10reb 11ast (01/20/05) -- and if you think there was any premediation to Reke's triple double tongith, you should read this game recap -- Mike telling guys to get out of his way so he could get the final rebound he needed, guys running away from rebounds so he could get it etc.. In any case, just after we traded Doug, and just a few weeks before Webb left. It was Mike's finest individual year, and the second triple double of his career. And yet he probably didn't even have the most impressive game on the Kings -- that would have been Webb in the midst of that great closing run ot his Kings career with a 27pt 13reb 7ast night. And the chemstiry at those times was so good that he got doused with water by his teammates after he got the triple. Maybe we're finally headed back that way. As an aside should also be noted that this game was against LeBron, who one night earlier had become the youngest player in history to get a triple double at 20yrs 21days, and would two nights later get hiz second. Boxscore

Bench

Thompson ( B ) -- in early and canned the 17 foot jumper, then stole a ball on defense. Drew the offensive foul against Bosh. Started the second missing the point blank shot from May, but got the o-reb tip. Missed the jumper. Out-saavied and outworked by Tyreke's cousin (Reggie) in the early 4th. Grabbed an offensive board of a Casspi miss, and finally FINALLY exploded in to the lane for the dunk. Block on the other end to trigger out break. oFrced a turnaround jumper. Dunk on the feed from Casspi. Added a garbagetime jumper. A sold reserve outing.

Vlade Divac 11pts 14reb 10ast (04/06/99) -- seemed there was another big man in these parts who could pass well enough to be a triple double threat, and at the end of his first half season with us, while bombs were falling on his wartorn country halfway around the world and he was calling home every night to make sure that his family had not been hit, he delivered on the first of three triple doubles he would have for us before age caught up to him.

Casspi ( C ) -- started off shaky as can be, adn despite being given a ncie long first half run just nto able to get anything going. Missed his first three, in the early 2nd missed the corner three from Hawes. Then missed back to back tip opportunities on the May miss. 0-5 first half, but did help on the glass. Was back for the 4th though, and acquitted himself much better. Finally got a figer roll on the break. Then another flip. Dunk on the break from May. Missed the side three. D-board and tried a bounce pass to Reke on the break. Fouled, and hit 1-2 FTs. Missed the side jumper. Finally got his minutes back up, and by the end it wasn't terrible. Even began to do some things. But the longball still looks flat, which could well be no legs, and the slow start holds this one down.

Mitch Richmond 38pts 10reb 10ast (01/22/97) -- take Reke's triple double, and double the scoring output and you will get an idea for just how good Mitch was back in the winter of '97. Not a natural triple double threat, it was nonetheless the last of three that he would deliver in his time witht the Kings.

Don't Make Me Use The Bat

Cisco ( B ) -- in and quickly hit the angle pop off the screen. Started the 2nd and just started a comically bad stretch (comical only if you know the final outcome of he game) with turnover after turnover. Turnover just rolled off his hand. Nic timing pass to Beno inside, but Beno pased it back out to Omri so no assist. Bad pass on the break leading Beno too much. Some ballhandling adventures up top against Calderon. Forced a post move and nothing. Westphal refused to pull him either, which would normally be a sing of aslumbering coach, but given Caoch's normal substitution hyperactivity, maybe its a sign of growth. Finally finished the half canning a three off a spinnind drive by Reke. Was in at the tail end of the third but di nothing unhtil the final quarter. Started the 4th drawing the foul and knocking down both FTs. Layup on the break from Reke (the somehwat questionable assist). And then with less than 2 minutes to go, hit the big shot, a quick jumper, to give Reke his triple double. And don't think that wasn't another pressure/cutch shot, because it was. Everybody knew where Reke was sitting, and Cisco wanted that shot and stepped up and drained it for the kid. Shot 5-5 on the night, grabbed 5 rebs. Were it not for the wild stretch in the second quarter this might have been even higher.

Lionel Simmons 14pts 12reb 13ast (01/07/94) -- the L-Train was a big time stat stuffer himself back in the day. This was the second of 2 triple doubles he had for us.

May ( C+ ) -- in to start the second quarter, drew the charge, missed the long jumper. Slapped the ball away from Reke's cousin. Back in at the end of the third and hit a little layup on a Beno dish. Started the 4th and stole the ball from Hedo in the open court and found Casspi on the break. Blocked inisde by Hedo. Could not hit the broad side of a barn (1-6) but in a complete 180 was all of a sudden winning all the hustle wars instead. On the o-boards, collected three steals.

Danny Ainge 27pts 11reb 13ast (12/05/89) -- that's right, in his short time in Sacto Boston's GM to put up a triple double. And not just any triple double, one of the biggest and most impresive statlines of the Sacto era. Ainge = well known superstar and all.

Temple ( INC ) -- in for the last minute and half of garbagetime. Missed a long jumper.

Rodney McCray 20pts 12reb 10ast (12/01/88) -- poor Rodney, a career roleplayer alongside Hakeem traded for and told to pretend to be a star. Then got sick and fat and couldn't even pretend anymore. But before his troubled stint ended, he still manged to rack up 2 triple doubles for us. This was the first.

Notes: outscored our first half in the third quarter alone. Wonder how often that has happpened over the years?

Reggie Theus 32pts 14reb 15ast (03/12/86) -- last but not least, certianly no tin his own mind, and certainly not by the enorous statline. Our last super-sized PG put up a super-sized triple double way back in '86. 32-14-15....and yet never even got another more modest one.

now i realize the importance of some experiance players in your team.
we play a lot better with Udrich and Landry.
since Kmart left it is a whole different team.

Is it just me or is Beno looking better and better playing with Reke in that back court.. We all have been saying that we don't really need a guy that demands the ball next to Tyreke and that we just need someone to take some of the PG load off him, hit open shots and handle while waiting Tyreke to get in position before giving him the ball. Beno should get major props for proving us Kings fans wrong this year. I don't think I have seen Beno play this well next to anyone ever.
