Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Peja ( A ) -- and so we go back the other way -- excellent game for Peja. Better first half than second half, when he kind of drifted back a bit. Again not just a questin of him being hot, question of him playing inspired, determined ball. Tonight he did and it resulted in aggressive offensive cuts + layups, threes in guy's faces, pretty good boardwork in the first half, and nice defense on Vince Carter before halftime as well. Second half was not nearly as strong, disappeared on the glass, Vince started scoring on him. But the game was pretty much over by that point, and the offense was still very efficient. 25 pts on 14 shots works for me, and too efficient to go with the "-".
Songaila ( C+ ) -- Darius wasn't terrible, but neither was he very good, and just on that basis alone he stood out amongst our starting 5. Of course he is a bencher just filling in, so both the motivation and talent level is different. Couldn't get his shooting touch going tonight, not much on the glass -- Brad kind of took care of that. Had a couple of ugly turnovers, but also made a nice skip pass to Bibby for an open three. 8pts 6rebs in a fill in start. *Shrug*
Miller ( A+ ) -- Just completely pummeled the Nets in every conceivable fashion tonight. Best player on the floor. Hit everything, inside and out. Dominated the glass. Passed well. Came out with a determined look in his eye that was appreciated -- with Webb out somebody had to step forward up front and Brad really led us out there. Of course there was not much competition, but you go for 31-12-5 and shoot 14-18 that's an A+ no matter who you are and who you are playing.
Mobley ( A- ) -- started slowly, but as per his wont, got stronger and stronger as the game went along and finished with such a rush of well rounded play that it was hard to hold the line on the "-" to his A. Basically he gets it for a middling first half and some troubles handling Carter defensively. But he came within 3 rebounds of a triple double and there were several interesting and welcome developments with Cat along the way. First, in the third quarter he broke out the ole Christie to a backcutting Peja pass from the top of the key -- nice to see that reappear in our offense with our new OG. Second, at the end of the third he took on the Bobby role as the guy to go one on one and take the shot at the end of the quarter, and hit it. Replacing some of the special plays of both of our old veteran guards. And tonight, with Webber's assists out of the lineup, Cat really stepped into that Christie role to be that third passer with Bibby and Miller. Very encouraging game because a few forced shots aside, tonight his game reeked of "Kings".
Bibby ( A- ) -- strong and easy game tonight. Really keyed our vastly improved passing, and was repeatedly set up for and drained open threes around the perimeter. In years past, doing this to Jason Kidd would have been a flat "A", but Jason is so obviously a shell of himself anymore, that its not that big of an accomplishment anymore. Webb is not always 100%, but he remains the only player as far as I know to ever come back as anything approaching his former self from that injury. In any case Bibby was excellent, and maybe even an straight A given that he was every bit as efficient as Peja and Brad, but still felt like probably only our #3 guy tonight.
Ostertag ( C+ ) -- short stint in the first half, and then back for garbagetime. Not much to report. Couple of blocks, nice no look drop off pass to Barnes in the last 20 seconds of garbagetime. Is making Shaq look like Reggie Miller on the line right now -- UGLY.
Martin ( C ) -- short first half stint and then played the entire 4th -- mostly extended garbagetime as we were up by 20 the whole way. Didn't do much again. Got his only points off a brilliant full court pass from Brad in the first half.
House ( INC ) -- extended garbagetime, almost enough minutes to rate him on, but game was over. Hit his shots, which is a nice change.
Barnes ( INC ) -- grabbed some garbagetime boards. Also made some garbagetime turnovers.
Bradley ( INC ) -- little scruffier effort for Bradley than the first two. Looked a little shaky on defense.
Daniels ( INC ) -- welcome back to the roster Erik. Now unfortunately didn't make much of a case for yourself in garbagetime.

Adelman ( B ) -- did something very interesting, maybe alarming, maybe brilliant -- more or less played our 5 starters almost straight on through the first 3 1/2 quarters. Just some short stints for Tag and Martin, but at the end of 3 I think all 5 starters were well over 30 minutes. Could be the confidence in the players, could be trying to restore us to rhythm after the Spurs disaster, could be just trying to knock the Nets out early and get to garbagetime. Whatever it was though, was interesting but I can't really sign off on it (which I am sure causes Rick no end of angst ;) ). Just no way Brad Miller and Cat should be in THIS game with 4:30 minutes left. No way we should have 3 starters logging 40+ minutes. That's just silly and excessive. The Kingsfans.com All-Stars could probably have played the 4th quarter and held off the Nets. No need to rack up extra wear and tear on the starters. Okay, for the rest -- team quite obviously listened up to whatever Rick said in the last couple of days, because we played this one right from the start. This was a bad team, and we would pretty much have had to beat ourselves to lsoe it. But we didn't just win, we played our game and dismantled them.

I agree with every single grade.

This is the first time I got to see a good look at the Kings with Mobley in the lineup.

Is he always "not so shy" to put the shot up ? Yeah ... he had some assists late, but boy...he's not too eager to pass the ball.

I'd probably give him a B, B- for this performance. He played a horrible first half, and a very good second. He's a skilled player, but he needs to pass the rock.

Miller was absolutely terrific, and Bibby was also very good.

There is only one grade I can give the team: A.

That was Kings basketball; team basketball. And, to paraphrase Grant, if you don't like it, you're nuts.

:D

Cat was doing exactly what he's supposed to do. As long as he keeps taking those shots, the defense has to respect him because, as we saw, he can make them. He DID pass the ball. He had assists spread throughout the game. He passed to virtually everyone. Yes, he took the shots when he was open but he also drove inside, drew fouls, etc. He did an outstanding job tonight all the way around. I cannot imagine giving him anything but the A-.

Man, your analysis about the Cat is right on. I mean only 10 assists?? That is completely unacceptable and selfish! Plus when you go 2/9 you should stop shooting! Theres no way you could get it going and go like 5/8 for 16 second half points!!(could you?) Not to mention only 7 Rebs! Cat just didn't come to play tonight... he should be less aggressive and pass more... NOT!

P.S. --You didn't just say a guy with 10 assists should pass the rock more did you??

Cat had 10 assists..as much as Bibby. So he was passing too.

Kings outrebounded Nets 42-30! And shot better than 53% from the FG and 3 point=Great WIN!

Nice to hear that Cat did a Doug laser pass to Pedja! Miss those!

Thanks for shoting more, Brad! :D 14-18 is so nice!

I didn't even look at the stat sheet. I guess I wasn't as impressed by his play as you were.

As I said, I thought he played very well in the second half (mainly because he made the shots he took) and he got others involved too. However, whenever he has the ball the first thing he's looking to do is shoot. Much like Peja, except that Mobley orchestrates the offense and gets way more touches.

But this is only the first impression I got from Mobley. You guys have watched him more and probably know his game better than I do.

Even though his shot wasn't falling (he only had 4 pts. at the half)... he still had 4 rebs and 4 assists at the half. If you've watched him play the last 4 games it was so easy to see he had laid the groundwork for a good game. Scorers need to keep shooting, tonight was just another example...

Its not entirely a wrong impression you have gotten -- just a question of whether that's a bad thing or not. We purprosely swapped out an offensively passive player for an aggressive scorer. Results have been encouraging so far.

Good grades, great game by all; no one was left out of this one. Pretty much pummeled 'em, only double digit scorer in Nets top 5 was Carter with 23, eh, pretty easy win. Starters bodies should be preserved for real play, I agree with that thought.

Just wanna be ready for the Spurs now.

Reina's Random Non-basketball grades:

Martin (C-): Is it me or does his chin look dirty? ...;)

Webb (C): Should have saved some of that money and bought a nicer looking suit

Mobley (D) Don't scare us like that!

I don't know about you, but I would take one of those suits. I'd prob need more money than I could get out of an ATM to buy one though.

I was glad to see that little smudge -- good fashion move when you are a grown man who could still get carded crashing a junior high prom. :D

no kidding?

what about others?

I knew the Kings had this game in the bucket; therefore, I decided to clean the bathroom. :D

I love clean bathrooms and the KINGS!!!

I know Mobley is kind of crazy when he attacks the basket. I was like plss take it easy......:p

Since Webber is a good looking guy, he can get away with anything. ;)

I thought I heard Mobley was like a model. Are you saying Webb is the better looking one?

::takes off basketball fan hat::

With Webb, there is no comparison. :D

:: puts basketball fan hat back on::

Sorry, it won't happen again...:o

In a word (or two),

oh yeah.

And I thought he looked fine! I like that suit.

I agree about the tie, but the suit was fine. Fine, I tell you.

Did I mention the suit with Webber in it looked fine?

Bibby (A+): Love his intro high five ritual -- I'll take grinning dork over jockish body slam any day.

Webb (A): Between the rock and the smile, how did you see the suit??

Evans (C): Didn't see any shots of the bandage and, oddly, kinda missed it.

Bibby - I have to agree. I'm not sure when he started that ritual, but it's obviously a spin-off of the "Crabby Dance" and I love it.

Webber - By hitting the pause, rewind, play, pause, rewind, play, pause, rewind, play...

Evans - Maybe he'll end up like Les Nesman of WKRP fame, and just MOVE the bandage so it's in a different location every day.

:D

So can I get a pick of Webb in his suit? I'll be totally impartial, and once I've run it by the wife, I'll give you the answer to Suit-gate!
