Geoff Petrie

Got give him alot of credit. He sure has an eye for young talent. I know he has been given a lot of crap lately some of it deservingly so but you can not deny the eye for talent he has. Just look at the this past draft.

Geoff Petrie knows how to draft better than anyone on the league. Personally, there is no other GM in the world I would want making the calls on draft night for the Kings. I would however like to see him turn back into that shark he used to be and get us on the receiving end of a good trade once in a while.

Seems he's very good at picking tall foreign small forwards who can shoot.

1996: Peja
2000: Hedo
2009: Omri

I bet if Danilo Galinari had fallen to the 12th pick in the 2008 draft, Geoff would have picked him.

Let's not get too hasty...He's done some good stuff but he's not perfect. One example is the 2001 draft. Sacramento picked Gerald Wallace at #25 (potential, gangbusters now but not then) and left Tony Parker, Mehmet Okur and Gilbert Arenas (went #32!!) on the table...plus in 2005, Sacramento picked Fransisco (which wasn't a bad pick) but even then, David Lee was still on the table. I'm jus' saying...

I think you're missing the point. The guys Petrie drafted are still good players who can help a team win. 30 teams passed on Arenas, so there was an obvious consensus from every GM that Arenas would not be the player he is today. THe only pick that was a bust that I can remember was Douby. Given that Petrie has generally had a low pick during his tenure, I would say he and the Spurs' Gm are the best at drafting. This year, he picked the better player in Evans when the fan abse wanted Rubio.

I thihnk this draft has brought him just above average on accessing draft talent. Like many other GMs he drafted has some nice finds and he has drafted some stinkers. So far Reke and Omri are looking nice, then again, we are what, 7 games into thier first season.

There will always be a couple guys to slip through. Thats just how it is.

I'd still take Wallace over Okur and Arenas (who plays about a game a year.)

David Lee has been one of the more decent front-court guys since he was drafted, plays all front court positions, and the Kings have needed such a player for a long time. I am not saying they should have gotten him instead of Garcia, but the bigger need was for a front-court player, not a swingman player.

Hindsight is 20/20...Geoff has made some questionable moves at best the past few years before the rebuild started mid-season last year. I think it was the Maloofs who were getting involved in the process that kind of slowed down the complete rebuild. Geoff has picked some gems in the last year, he's cleared the salary cap, and paved the way for something good in the next year or two. Forward thinking is all that matters...

Agreed...but I doubt the Knicks even knew he was going to live up to his upside when he fell in their laps. C'mon, we're talking about the KNICKS, WTF have they done on their the past 7 or 8 years that's amounted to ANYTHING good?? Might be giving them a little too much credit...there were ALOT of other teams that passed on Lee before the Kings, so it's their bad too, right??

Petrie is an above average GM when it comes to the draft. Douby was a bad choice. But he was a bad choice in a fairly weak draft. Thomas and the Knicks selected all-star Renaldo Balkman right after the Kings picked Douby and right before the Sun's picked Rondo. After you removed Bargnani, Aldridge, Roy, and Gay from the draft, it became a crap shoot for a lot of GM's.

Two players that went before Douby have already come to the Kings and gone. Simmons and Williams. Williams being the fifth pick in that draft. It was a draft in which a lot of GM's took gambles. Adam Morrison went 3rd in that draft. Tyrus Thomas 4th and Patrick O' Bryant 9th. JJ. Redick went in the lottery. There were a lot of mistakes made by a lot of people in that draft. Petrie was just one of them. Not excusing him. Thats usually were he excells. But on this occasion his gamble didn't pay off. Only three truely very good players came out of the Lottery portion of that draft. Aldrige, Roy and Gay. One could argue for Bargnani, but based on his production up until now thats a hard arguement to make.

I know a Rondo had his fan club on this fourm and kudo's to them for seeing what I couldn't see. I wasn't that high on him at the time. He's either proved me wrong, or the addition of great players around him has made him look like a better player. It doesn't matter, since he's doing the job he's being paid to do.

To my mind thats the only truely bad selection he's made. You can go to some of his other choices and find players that ended being good to great players that were selected after he picked. But you can't really find fault with his choice. Thats the sad part. Most of the time, you only get one choice.

Yea it is tricky, and real easy to criticize. The only problem I had was with the love affair with SG/SF swingmen. I'm not as mad that he passed on Lee, as to WHY he passed on Lee. I know you draft for talent, but our need outweighed Cisco's talent at the time. Lee was a proven banger, a guy who, albeit a bit undersized for the PF/C, (Kevin Love mold...) you could see he was a monster rebounder. Again, easy to point fingers now, but I can find 10 GMs off the spot that are worse that Geoff. Draft is not where Peitre screws up enough that we call for his head.

i loved gerald wallace but passing on arenas was a mistake... which could be the biggest one of all. just because other gms passed on him doesnt mean that it was okay for our gm to pass on him. 12 teams passed on kobe bryant... 29 teams passed on boozer and manu... 30 teams passed on ben wallace and brad miller...

petrie had 1 pick and he didnt pick arenas... he wouldve been awesome on this team back in our glory days.

I'll be honest. Right before our pick I had four players that I would be happy with. Lee wasn't one of them. I wasn't that high on him at the time, and I misjudged him. Effort and heart along with basketball IQ can make up for a lot. But the four playes I wanted in order of desire were:

Turiaf
Bass
Kleiza
Garcia

I was higher on Turiaf because I thought the Kings needed some toughness and there wasn't a doubt in my mind that he would bring that. Plus I though he was a better player than he was getting credit for. I was also fortunate in that I got to see him play a lot out here on the west coast. Bass was another player that I though would bring some toughness, despite being a little undersized. My doubts about Kleiza were that I just wasn't sure what position he would play. Turned out, it didn't matter. Garcia was another player I liked because of his toughness. ( beginning to see a trend here? ) What I didn't like was his inconsistancy with his shot, and he tended to be a little turnover prone.

I believe a lot of people are seeing Lee with hindsight. Not saying you are. But I know I'am. I simply didn't think he would be that good. But the next time I see a player that overaccheives in college, I'm not going to be so quick to think he can't do the same thing at the next level.:)

yeah the garcia draft was almost a waste of a pick because all of the players picked after him are as good or worse... there really arent any players that are clearly better than garcia. though bass wouldve been cool... i didnt like turiaf and he missed most of his rookie season with recovery from heart surgery... lee is whatever... though he couldve been a nice option at pf behind thomas.... and we wouldnt have lost out on anything if we hadnt picked garcia.

People like to point out his mistakes. OK name 5 GMs in this league that had a better draft records in the last 12 years.
how many gms have had their job for 12 years and which teams have had enough draft picks in that time span to make the comparison? i can think of only 3 off the top of my head... 2 plus petrie....

kevin pritchard - blazers, he hasnt been there for 12 years but is clearly better than geoff at drafting...

rc buford - spurs

donnie nelson - mavericks

petrie is probably the 2nd longest tenured gm in the nba... the lakers had jerry west as gm for a while and he did a great job of drafting and making deals to make the best team possible. how many gms can you think of that have been at their job for more than 5 years? having a job doesnt make geoff good at his job.

kevin pritchard....
Some around here would argue that selecting both Jeff Pendergraph and Dante Cunningham over DeJuan Blair would be a mistake. Bayless has looked pretty pedestrian thus far, with Randolph, Speights, Courtney Lee, perhaps Hibbert (and depending on when the deal was made, maybe JT) still on the board at that pick...

doesnt mean that it was a mistake... you cant hit a home run every time you are up to bat. sometimes they are just base hits...

#29
Well if we are looking at base hit how many players have Petrie drafted are still in the league I would say more than above average. Petrie has faults do not get wrong but what he is really excels at is the draft. That is apparent.

true, he definitely has more hits than misses but he does tend to play it safe... when was the last time he actually swung for the fences? peja?
