This one was TOUGH! I ended up going with the one I chose only because I really liked one of the covers and it was by someone I had never heard of before.

I went with DD here because overall the list was much stronger for me. 63Royals' list started strong ("Me and Bobby McGee", "Black Magic Woman", Pride and Joy") and hit a great Cocker song in the middle, but the reason the list rates a note from me is the revelatory "Cortez the Killer". Just an amazing guitar solo, running for well over ten minutes that you can just close your eyes to and get lost in. I'd never have heard it if it hadn't been picked, so I've got to thank 63Royals for that one.

Glad to hear you guys liked the Built to Spill cover of Cortez the Killer -- the main reason for having one of these drafts is to find out about great music you didn't know about, right? Built to Spill is from Boise -- not the first place you'd look for great bands -- and they've been around for about 20 years. As much as I like their cover of Cortez, my favorite song from the album Live is Virginia Reel. It makes me think of the line from Johnny B. Goode about playing guitar like ringing a bell.

They also have another great cover of a Neil Young song on YouTube -- Cowgirl in the Sand -- that was recorded in a record store in Hamburg, Germany.

Beatles, Fugees? Yes, please. Oh and I love the Birdy picks. And of course, Lauryn Hill.

Dime gets my vote here, but Tom Petty alone was almost enough to sway my vote.
