bee: Kings don't make move as trade deadline passes

BALLER4LIFE

G-League
The NBA trade deadline came and went Thursday, and the Kings' roster looked the same after noon PST as it did before it.
While the efforts were many to move Mike Bibby for a package that could help the Kings going into the future, the point guard will, according to a team official, remain with the team.
The Cleveland Cavaliers continued a push to land Bibby early Thursday morning but was unable to come to a compromise. No other Kings trades took place either.

It's not the worst outcome (the worst would have been a bad trade), but it's certainly not very inspiring. Right now the only date that matters is the draft lottery.

Some NBA guru -- maybe it was Red on Roundball -- once said: "Sometimes, the best deals are the ones you don't make."

While it's a bit disappointing that nothing happened, better to ride out the season, get a lottery pick and then make some decisions than to accept less than equal value for Bibby. It's not very sexy, but maybe it's smart. We'll know come the summer.

Thank the stars we didn’t move mike bibby. I wasn’t ready to see him go. Now he can lead us to a championship and THEN opt out during the summer

Best Case Scenario = Bibby continues to shoot long ball after long ball and plays worse the rest of the season. Gets us a nice draft pick, and then he opts out of his contract and we don't sign him.

Damn. This season is really gonna suck now. Like many others, I was hoping to see the youth movement get started. Now it looks like we have another half season of Bibby's bricks to look forward to.

the youth movement? and suck like the bobcats? how long has that team been in the league? 3 years? 3 years of hard sucking? that doesnt even deserve a "no thank you"; that flat out deserves a "NO".

Agree.

Until the Webber trade, Petrie didn't make mid-season bandaid adjustments. I'm thinking this could be interpreted to mean the days of trying to find "quick fix" solutions are finally over...

I'd be happy to have a team of 24 year olds, and Corliss to teach them the ropes.

It's not like we're going to be seeing round 2 in the next 15 months anyway.

That is true but I think the Maloofs were the ones who wanted Webber traded at all costs. I really think Petrie hands were tied.

I tend to agree. And by not biting on some of the ridiculous trade offers just to move Bibby, I think Petrie may have been given the green light to do whatever it takes to rebuild this team the right way and NOT by keeping the patient on life support just to snag that coveted 8th slot in the playoffs.

Why so he can teach them how to make stupid mistakes and be decent bench players?

You're kidding, right? Corliss Williamson is a class act and savvy veteran. He can speak with experience of going all the way and winning the big show. He's got a sixth man of the year award under his belt and he's ALWAYS ready to play.

Corliss is one of those players any team in the league is lucky to have as a mentor to their young players.

So he can teach them how to be pros who conduct themselves with class. Noboyd teaches a star how to be a star on the court. But being a star off of it is not so natural. A lot of these kids are very young, come from shaky backgrounds, and have been pampered and manipulated their entire lives. They have entier posses of hangers on and drifters elaching off of them. Having an actual adult in the lockerroom, and a cheap one who will stay out of the way fo their development, has value.

I think that's been Petrie's strategy for the last 2 years now - Let's wait and see what happens. By the time we've "waited" and "seen" Bibby and Miller will be over the hill and Ron-Ron will have mutated anothe personality.

I suggested the same thing about 2 years ago. My fear was that we were hanging on to the past and not restocking for the future when we had players with higher trade value. It's easy to second guess now, but I really hope it was just a lesson that needed to be learned and not a reflection of the way that Petrie and the Maloofs do business. We'll see in the next offseason when they'll have plenty of time to consider their options.

I think the opposite is true. Petrie has, either on his own or because of urging from the Maloofs, continually made "band aid" type deals. Short term stuff to try and keep the team competitive. That clearly didn't work. If he wasn't willing to pull the trigger on a trade deal this time, it could well be because they have finally realized you have to actually treat the wound and not just the symptoms...

I just do not subscribe to the notion that Geoff Petrie is blindly stumbling around with nary a clue about what it will take to right this ship.

Maybe someone could enlighten me here and tell me how not making a move means we are going to be rebuilding the right way and not keeping the patient on life support. We are now tied up with Salaries of 54 million for the next 2 years with Miller, Thomas, and Bibby being unmovable. Those 3 alone tie up 32 million in contracts next year and 35 million the year after that. Throw in the 18.3 mill we still owe Rahim and the 22 mill we still owe Salmons and we aren't looking very good. Not to mention that Martin will be due an extension soon.

We will continue to have the most unathletic front court imagineable as I can't see us signing anyone else considering all the money we have locked up between our 3 PF/C anyway.

Suffice to say I am not very happy.

so...you prefer to suck for three years and be on a down swing, than suck for three years and be on an upswing?

technically, it hasn't been three years for us. give it 2 more months.

I agree. Just look at this mess
http://www.hoopshype.com/salaries/sacramento.htm

We are tied to a frontcourt that no one wants to touch for 3 more years after this year. Our veteren talent (Ron and Mike) could both leave for nothing by the end of next season. We have no cap space, no high picks. It's just....ugly.

A lot of your points are valid. But the trade deadline isn't the only time a team can make moves. The deadline and draft day are when media hype is at its highest and there's a greater sense of urgency, especially among fans, to get something done. But if the Kings couldn't get a package they were comfortable with for Bibby, there's no reason to trade a dime for a nickel. Perhaps there will be more opportunity to shed salary or make a meaningful deal in the offseason.

I have the impression from all that I've read here and elsewhere that the Kings WANTED to do something. Surely Petrie and even the Maloofs have an inkling what the team's problems are. But again, if the Cavs or whomever weren't offering some combination of cap relief, draft picks, or players who can make a difference, why make a deal out of desperation and panic?

Too bad we didn't ask for a deadline extension to take more of a look at this:
Miami Tried- Word is the HEAT were simply too late to the dance. They had Dorell Wright and Udonis Haslem on the table for Bibby, but that was not enough.
http://www.hoopsworld.com/article_20944.shtml Not enough perhaps, but a decent start, and something might have been made of it. Guess there's no point in worrying about it now, though.

Maybe because the season ticket holders will be asked to renew their tickets next month and the way this season is going they will be dropping like flies. I really don't know if I want to throw out my cash(Most is due before free agency begins in July...how convenient) knowing that I very well might end up with this same roster. Every team seemed to be scared to take on Bibby and the additional 28 million left on his deal...considering he is about the only moveable piece of the ****ty contracts we have I'm not sure what hope we have??
