Despite starting the Sacramento Kings regular season with a loss Wednesday evening, fans and businesses said they are hoping for a successful year. Kings fans flocked to the Golden 1 Center to watch their hometown team take on the Portland Trail Blazers for the first game of the season. The game ended with Portland winning 115-108.

The Sacramento Kings are one of the top teams to beat in the NBA Western Conference, and fans from around the Capitol City are showing support for the hometown team. A new mural was created near 20th and J for the so-called “Beam Team.” The words “Light the Beam” are proudly displayed in the mural — which is a reference to the mean shown in the sky when the team wins. On Wednesday, the Sacramento Kings beat the Los Angeles Lakers 116-111 for their fifth straight victory.

Now, Sacramento's Downtown Partnership is highlighting it as a key thing raising the city's profile on social media and in arenas across the country. The 2023 State of Downtown event, which traditionally highlights the economic positives over the past year, was delivered inside the SAFE Credit Union Convention Center. It's a winner-take-all Game 7 in Sacramento on Sunday. Sacramento Kings players expect the home crowd to roar at the Golden 1 Center, cowbells and all, as they take on the Golden State Warriors for one final time. Now the Kings hope to do something they haven't done in 42 years -- win Game 7. The last time that happened in the playoffs was 1981, when the team was based in Kansas City and beat the Phoenix Suns in the Western Conference Semifinals.
