In an interview with the director, First Class was not a reboot but not much more was said about that. Probably more of what the comics do, with retroactive continuation to fix some continuation errors.
I've come to accept that Comic book movies (Aside from Watchmen) will always have to be loosely based. No way they can fit all those interlooping story lines with decades of history into a 2 hour movie with a budget.
Also I noticed that they were including obscure characters (ones that I had to look up on Wikipedia) like Darwin and Angel Salvadore (Lenny Kravitz daughter). It was to diversify cast, I guess so we don't get one that resembles Twilight.
