Yesterday I heard my neighbors fire alarm go off and it went on for about 10 minutes. I started smelling smoke and I ran outside. Walked over to the main office and let them know about it and had someone go check the place with me while the other lady was on standby to be ready to call 911.

Peaked through the balcony window and it was open. Saw smoke creeping out of it and it started to become thicker. Knocked on the door, tried to open the door but it was locked and could hear a small dog inside. The lady who accompanied me called for some keys but this neighbor had added an additional lock to the door. The lady at the office was notified to call for the fire department.

The door was busted open before the fire department showed up. Ran inside and found the stove was on and no one was home. The elderly couple left a couple things cooking while they stepped out to go to the market. The stove was turned off the melting pots were removed. It smelled like melted kevlar. Four fire trucks showed up but luckily it didn't get to the point where they were needed.

The neighbors came home to discover the havoc. This is probably the third time they have done something like this but this is the closest it has happened to something dangerous happening. I hope they learned their lesson.

Unfortunately they may both be suffering some early dementia. Or one has some dementia and the other doesn't want to recognize it. When a similar thing happened to my mom, I knew it was time to think about different living arrangements for her. I don't know who, but someone may need to report these incidents to social services, who can maybe get in touch with a family member.

I don't really mind the rain, though this is the first year in the 5 I've lived here that Portland has lived up to its billing in that department, but I had to turn my heat on this weekend. Jeesh!!!

Considering the lovely weather I'll be experiencing when I move to the south in late June (I'm a month away and already dreading the thought of lifting heavy things in all that mugginess), I was really hoping that my last few days here would be pleasant. But, nope. Two days ago it was hailing in Humboldt. Yay.

You know, that article I just linked to in the NBA forum made me think of a line from a Chappelle Show skit... I can't repeat it because of language, but some of you might know which one I'm talking about... Here's a hint:

It has been hailing here off and on for 2 or 3 weeks. I'm quite over it. Always seems to come on when I'm waiting for a bus or walking across campus. Someday I may break down and own an umbrella.
I currently own five umbrellas. Specifically because I hate carrying them.

Every umbrella I've ever purchased has been because I laughed in the face of weather forecasts, decided not to deal with an umbrella, and then got stuck in/sought refuge in a mall or grocery store during a torrential downpour and bought another damn umbrella as a means of escape. I've probably done that at least 15 times in my life.

Today is a special day for me

after the grueling Dissertation and summer classes

I am officially a College GRADUATE!!!!!!!

Now I'm heading for Med school.... and a fine one in our country at that! :D

my last college year was all about redemption (was a lackadaisical student before... changed this year)

It's times like this You can see how far you will and can go if you really put your mind to it.....

Just a great day

So...does it still feel like winter to anybody else? Where I'm at, Camino(ish), it's on the edge of snowing, there are chain controls over the summit, and it's been raining for days. I'm not complaining, I could certainly do without a fire season this year, if that's how it works out (one good rainstorm every few weeks should do the trick), but I was hoping to head up to the High Sierra for some camping this summer. Right now, however, there's still 10 feet of snow on the ground up there in spots (and more in other spots). How's the weather in your neck of the woods, VF21?

Happy Memorial Day

This is the cemetery my grandpa and grandma are at. Not my video, but this is from today.

Its weird how life events can just make you physically ill. Trying so hard not to crawl up in a ball and cry.

What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger. I just keep trying to tell myself that.
