2009 Summer FA thread

Just want to throw this together now for rumors, signings, etc. Let's not clutter the board unnecessarily with lots of threads covering the same thing.

Pistons strike deal with Gordon

The Detroit Pistons have reached agreement with free-agent guard Ben Gordon(notes) on a five-year contract worth around $55 million, a source with knowledge of the talks told Yahoo! Sports Wednesday evening.
The Pistons are continuing to negotiate with forward Charlie Villanueva(notes).
July 8 is the first day free agents can sign contracts.
Gordon and Villanueva, who played together for a year at UConn, traveled to Detroit on Wednesday morning to meet with Detroit president Joe Dumars.

Ben Gordon at $11 million per? Wow. I thought owners were tightening their purse strings. I like Gordon as a 25 minute/night bench scorer and closer, but he's too small to play shooting guard and takes too many shots (his strength) to be point guard. If the Pistons really offered him $55 million, they're dumb. And if he doesn't take it, he's dumb.

Per the end of the Marc Stien article:

Portland is one of just five teams this summer projected to be sufficiently under the salary cap to sign free agents outright, along with Detroit, Memphis, Oklahoma City and Sacramento.

Ok so if Detroit takes Ben Gordon, and Portland takes Hedo, that only leaves 3 teams including us to spend bucks on free Agency (other than mid-level exceptions?) And since we were not planning on spending that much seems not that much money to be had for a long list of FA

does that put us in a position to get some real bargains, you know low demand high supply?

according to SI.com, you can add villanueva to the pistons as well. rumblings seem to be gordon at 5 yr 50M at least, and charlie at 5 yr 35M at least.

ariza leaning towards leaving the lakers

No problem, I think yours could be the "official tracker" while this can discuss items at will, even those that may not actually occur.
oops maybe i should have read this before i posted it in the "official FA thread" since it isnt a done deal yet. i'll post it here again and i swear its the last time ill post it :p. maybe a mod can delete it from the other thread if they feel it shouldnt be there

espn is saying sources are telling them ariza leaving LA because they wont go over the MLE. nothing for sure yet but still being reported on espn

didnt know whether to put this here or in the NBA forum but espn is saying sources are telling them ariza leaving LA because they wont go over the MLE. nothing for sure yet but still being reported on espn

pretty sure he will be back w/ the lake show next year. he was a key piece to their title run. if anybody needs to go is LO. the guy is very inconsistent eating his candy.

sorry don't want to nitpick but since Gorat was one everyone's list, I think its important to note that he verbally committed to Dallas and that king's dont need to be in the running for Lee or Bass either...

Sheed to the Celtics for the MLE

Info:

ESPN

Rasheed Wallace is joining the Boston Celtics, giving the Celtics one of the most important free agents on the marketplace as they attempt to return to the championship.

Bill Strickland, Wallace's agent, told the Boston Herald and the Boston Globe on Sunday night that the 34-year-old forward told him to call off meetings the agent was in the process of scheduling with the Orlando Magic, San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Mavericks...

Looks like Kidd might return to the Mavs, but lets hold off and see if that really happens. ;)

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4307928

Jason Kidd has given the Dallas Mavericks a verbal commitment that he will re-sign with the team Wednesday, according to NBA front-office sources.

Kidd

Sources told ESPN.com that Kidd, 36, will receive a 3-year, fully-guaranteed contract worth in excess of $25 million.
Kidd elected to stay in Dallas in the face of a hard push from the New York Knicks, who last week offered Kidd the most they could ($19 million over three years).

Man, was hoping he'd go to the Spurs so someone could give the Lakers more competition this year. Not sure what this means for Kendrick Perkins, and I'm assuming Big Baby will sign elsewhere. Then again, Bill Simmons has been speculating that KG's injury is worse than disclosed, possibly career-threatening, so maybe he's on to something and Sheed is important insurance at PF, too.
