Even in the event of blowing it up, the remaining young pieces seem kind of bleak.

Hali is a complimentary piece (albeit one I believe in and may have an outside shot to develop into a star).

Mitchell is a role player defensive guard meant to patch up the league worst defense.

They were both NBA ready guys drafted to fit with this current core, not high ceiling guys for a rebuild that were likely to break out into stars.

They're pretty damn ho-hum, and we might want to look at trading them for higher ceiling guys.
I think the signs are that Monte is still going for it so if they were moved it would probably be for a win now package. You keep them but if they interfere with getting a top pick in a rebuild then it's going to be a tough thing to navigate.

How can anyone watch Scottie Barnes and not tell me going for top 5 picks matter? What a franchise changer.
I hated the Davion pick. Not because of who he is as a player, but because his fit and age mean the chance of him being a star are very, very low.

Evan Mobley or Scottie Barnes could have changed this franchise. Mitchell will likely be a solid complimentary player. That's a massive difference just from picking 9th instead of 3rd or 4th in this last draft.

And we'll almost certainly see the same thing again for this next draft. So frustrating.

I've said this before in a similar response, but as happy as I've been with Hali/Mitchell, imagine this team with consecutive 3rd overall picks: LaMelo Ball and Evan Mobley. That's how you build a title team.

Exactly. I don't hate the pick but if Monte actually thought stacking PG's like Vlade stacked C's was a great plan at a time where both spots aren't nearly as valuable or hard to fill otherwise, then he needs to have learned his lesson. If it's Dumars calling the shots then we're doomed.

Totally understand the sentiment but every championship-contending team needs a Davion Mitchell so I don't hate the pick too much.

so then we'd be looking at a T-Wolves style rebuild more than a blow up style one. Doable but also entirely dependent on lottery luck,
Ideally, in that scenario, I'd like that we try to keep Bagley, he's the only pure offensive threat outside of Fox who is most likely to be capable of getting points/fouled on his own in the current roster.

I've had 0 issues with Davion, especially considering Franz, Scottie, Giddey and all those guys were gone. Pretty clear he's adjusting on offense, but we've also seen real spike games from him where we can see him being a damn good offensive player. And this team needs a culture changer like him in the worst way.

Doesn't matter what direction we take the team, Davion is going to be able to fit in.

Yeah, but talent is talent
It's not though. That's what got Monte into the pickle he's put himself in with the backcourt. There is a clear path to winning in the league right now and versatility on the wing and shooting ability are the prime components. GM'ing isn't hard if you are just trying to compete. Take the teams above yours, and copy off of their homework. Don't try and convince people that you just drafted the first barely 6 foot guard that can play 5 positions. Gosh, and people blasted Vlade for saying Bags could play SF, lol.

Unless he really improves his outside shot, I don't see his potential being much higher than his current level
Kings fans get super locked in on his perimeter shooting but when you've got a guy who can get to the paint at will, you generally don't need him to be a killer from the perimeter so much as you need the guys around him to nail shots. Free throw shooting is important. Being a 37% plus three point shooter? Not so much.

I liked Barnes in this draft and hoped he'd fall to the Kings but I didn't expect him to be this good this fast.

But all along I thought Mobley was the best player in this draft. More than that, he seemed like a perfect fit with Fox and Haliburton. And he's fit seemlessly alongside a traditional center in Jarrett Allen so he'd probably fit next to Holmes too.

But as what though? That's the question. You don't fill out your rotation with lottery picks. If you do, someone else will eventually offer them a bigger role and payday to go along with it if they live up to the hype.

He isn't making an All Star team unless he can improve his outside shot

Definitely. In hindsight my frustration on draft night was that the Kings failed again to land a star in the draft. Mitchell was much better than drafting a bust as he'll likely have a long and successful career. But the Kings getting a guy who will always fit in is good but doesn't move the needle for such a bad team.

That said, Mitchell and Hali seem to play well together which is why I would like to see the Kings trade Fox for Simmons.

Not just the shot. On offense, he's a below average passer. Especially so for a PG. Count the number of times he drives and passes to the perimeter. It's rare. Very, very, very rare.

The idea that he's close to a consistent all star level talent is laughable.
