DRAFT PICK discussion thread

My point is that there were multiple reports on teams intrested to trade up for Luka. Zero reports for teams interested to trade up for Bagley
That's because teams at the top were NOT sold on Luka and the teams below were willing to take a flyer for the potential fit. The Mavs already have a SF named Harrison Barnes. They drafted Luka to be a PG/SG because last years pick is a SG/PG.

Bottom line, Luka would not have fit on this team withour major reconstruction of the roster, and Bagley fills a MAJOR hole while also getting the chance to be special at his position.

Whether you like it or (obviously) not, the Kings just drafted one HELLUVA player that the renowned experts all believe was the right choice. You can argue all you want about the current league and how small players are dominating but Bagley fills one major hole on this team and he will do it while pissing off the holes he exposes on every other team in the league. His skillset against PFs in the league is just way too tantalizing to pass up.

This is a good point, I think you're spot on on your Mavs analysis here.

BUT, I think Luka would have been a good fit for us too, as we do desperately need a big wing. The biggest concern I had with Luka is that we've got some guys who are (or are expected to be) great with the ball in their hands: Fox, Bogdan, Giles - and we might dilute Luka's contribution, while Baglet's athleticism will stand out for us.

Well, looking back on my season notes on Bagley, they ended like this:

I mean, the feeling right now is that the draft goes Ayton-Doncic, but Bagley is a damn solid option at #3. Solidified his position in Tier 1. I like Jackson, but man I think I take Bagley in front of Jackson. And dammit, compare him to Ayton and he doesn’t have the size, but he’s such an amazing athlete I think it makes up for it. Is Ayton fluid enough to be Embiid? I dunno. Maybe I take Bagley #1...
So, I'm OK with Bagley!

I have no idea where you drew that conclusion. The reporting was that a lot of teams drooled over Doncic, nothing similar was reported for Bagley.

Also I dont know what you are talking about with those positions. Barnes is a combo forward for them and Dennis Smith is their point guard. Mavs just were one of the teams that liked Doncic and had the avility to guarantee Tre Young for Hawks.

Our hole is not at a big man position. Our big men currently are: Giles, Skal, Wcs, Kosta, Zbo and Bagley. And hopefully you ply those one at a time. Our biggest hole is wing players. Again, things you are saying is just confusing. Our bigges need is in the wing/forward position. We have JJ and thatd it. But yeah drafting the fifth 1st round big man in the last three draft is just "filling a hole"

Luka is a great fit on the Mavs: Barnes can play D on the better wing player and Smith can shoot the lights out off the ball.

It’s a much better fit then on the Kings.

Luka is a better fit on the Mavs. Dennis Smith is a 6'0 shooting guard. Their skills complement each other quite well. I like that pairing better than how Luka would have fit with us.
A shooting guard that’s averages a higher volume of assists with a better assist to turnover ratio than our point guard?

We had some of the worst plus minus in the league. We have holes everywhere. We needed to draft BPA. We shall see if we did.

Or at least to a location where u say there is water, then u get there aint no water
???

The entire article is about Robinson talking good about Bagley, and he makes a couple of references to him being smart on the court. I don't know what you're missing.

I agree. In general you always draft a bpa if you are rebuilding. To me it clearly was Doncic. But if we are filling holes, big men should be last on that list
