Luka Doncic (pre and post-draft discussion thread)

One thing I haven’t seen spoken about much is how having a transcendent player like Luka could effect our FA desirability. Vlade has put us in a terrific cap position for the next two years and having a player like Luka on your team who can get guys the ball in the perfect spot and maximize their efficiency has to be attractive, no? Maybe not this summer but if he really shows out during his rookie campaign I think guys would gladly consider a pay day to move to California with a young, talented core that should be starting to jell.

So Ordinary That It's Truly Quite Extraordinary

The most ridiculous part about this tweet is that I saw one from another writer who was claiming that Vlade wanted Doncic but Vivek wanted Bagley.
Yes that's what I've seen too.

The fact is the Kings have played it so good that nobody knows what they are doing and it's driving these guys up a wall, so why not make it look like the Kings are dysfunctional instead of actually putting it together. Of course last year the Kings were idiots too until the end of draft night writers were falling over themselves to give them high grades. Same in Free Agency despite the end results, everyone was impressed with what they did.

If it all falls into place here at the 11th hour seems only Phoenix can mess up Kings plan.
Yep. All these "smokescreens" and other rumors are from disgruntled "experts" who really have nothing to talk about. If Phoenix for some reason takes Doncic, we've got Ayton. If Phoenix takes Ayton, we walk out with Doncic. Neat and clean, no fuss or muss.

My god I can't wait anymore. Just a few hours and all of this will be over. Today Luka will be a King, I don't want to consider any other option right now. Luka or bust!

The Hoopshype article also had a number of American players who spent time in the NBA like Shane Larkin and Pierre Jackson.

How many competitive players that we're in the NBA and then ended up in Europe are likely to annoint a Slovenian kid as a potential NBA star? Jason Thompson especially comes to mind as a salty dude that would have the mindset that if he (JT) couldnt stick in the NBA that there's no way Luka would go over and be a great player. Never mind that JT is getting just a few minutes for Fenerbahce while Doncic was the league MVP.

Everybody sees things through their own lens.

Me, I see Luka as a high floor guy that could bring a fun, passing offense back to Sacramento but is likely never the best player on a playoff/contending team. I think the path for him to be an NBA star is very narrow. I could see him maybe making an all-star game or two but not consistently a top 20-30yp player over his career.

I think Bagley has a better shot of being a multiple time all-star but I could also see Bagley being a guy who puts up stats on bad teams.

Outside of Ayton I'm not seeing franchise players in this draft. Bamba could be a game changer defensively but he'll likely never be a guy you toss the ball to at the end of games to get you a tough bucket.

So to me it really comes down to what skills & strengths you value as a team. Defense? Passing and shooting? Inside scoring and rebounding?

One more day.
I always like to read your comments, and for the most part I agree with you. Here I don't, because I can clearly see Luka being the best player on a playoff team, or even more than that. In my opinion, his ceiling is very high. I said it already, I truly believe he can be a 6-8 Steve Nash, and Steve was a pretty good player... His shooting will improve, as every part of his game. I'm sure of it because I've never seen a 19-year-old with this kind of BBIQ and feel for the game. You can't teach that, I'm sure this will also help him overcome some of his physical limitation (which are way overblown around here I believe).

I like Bagley too, don't get me wrong. I could live with that pick. . BI'm sure he is and will be very good, maybe a star too. But I think Luka is special.

People who don’t really know basketball, but think that they do, are overly enamored with verticality (i.e. Vivek). If you’ve never scored consistently on bigger, more athletic players it kind of blows your mind that it could even be possible.

The other thing, and people get irritated about this idea, but I think we have an instant problem with Fox and his agent if we take Doncic, and that scares Vivek. I don’t think it would be something we couldn’t smooth over, and there’s no way Vlade gives a darn about it, but ownership gets skittish with those kind of things.
Luka is 6 foot 8 for christ sake. Im really not understanding where these opinions and assumptions being put on Fox are coming from. Are we so used to chaos around here that we're automatically creating worst case scenarios 6 months down the line and beyond? actually, dont answer that. I dont blame you.

But we will be fine, guys. Fox is like the nicest guy, and they can compliment each other beautifully. Have faith that the sun will shine on this franchise for once!

Yeah, he clearly prefers Doncic to Bagley.

I think he was generally fair to Bagley but (a) he clearly values skill over athleticism which isn't unexpected for a guy that makes skill training videos and calls himself Coach Nick and (b) I think he overestimates how much Luka can/will improve athletically with NBA strength & conditioning.
watching these clips, he plays like Josh Jackson and WCS to me. Im really not impressed

Yeah I really liked the way Quin Snyder gave him the keys early on. With the loss of Hayward, I don't think they were expecting big things in Utah so it was a good choice to let him off the leash from the start. He had some really inefficient games to start the year but got better and better as the season went on. He was almost the opposite of the player I thought he was going to be. I thought he was going to be the best defensive rookie and a so so offensive player but that script got flipped around in a hurry.

I kind of wish Joerger had done the same with Fox, but who knows, maybe Fox wasn't ready for something like that.
I heard that you have to sign 40 million dollars worth of mentors and run 80' style offense trough high post, otherwise you are just throwing your first, second and third year players to the wolfs.
