Luka Doncic (pre and post-draft discussion thread)

It doesn't look to me they have to put a smaller player on him to outquick him. I would imagine they'll put a typical SF defender on him.
Having a SF on him and running pick and roll through him is a + advantage in that scenario. And there are still plenty of SF's that he'll be able to get around. With the rules the way they are the ball handler is going to have the major advantage. Also, Luka is very good at using his body to push through defenders. That's another major advantage towards the ball handler until they allow more handsy defense.

Taking the ball out of Fox, Bogi, and Giles(?!) hands is not a concern. The Rockets make it work with 2 of the most controlling guards in the nba. That will not be an issue.

If you go by what succeeds in the league ATM you want to have as many skilled players as possible. Another unique aspect of Lukas game is that he's a strong and physical rebounder so you don't even lose out there much if you played him at PF.

I trust Amick though and Vivek has a history of meddling
My hope is Amick is spinning part of the smokescreen, he does have a soft spot for Sac and other writers and reporters seem to do dirty work for teams, why not Sam spinning something for Sac. My conspiracy theory is the Kings want Doncic so bad that they aren't taking any chance that Phx would trade down because of an offer they can't refuse. CONSPIRACY THEORY!!!

People who don’t really know basketball, but think that they do, are overly enamored with verticality (i.e. Vivek). If you’ve never scored consistently on bigger, more athletic players it kind of blows your mind that it could even be possible.

The other thing, and people get irritated about this idea, but I think we have an instant problem with Fox and his agent if we take Doncic, and that scares Vivek. I don’t think it would be something we couldn’t smooth over, and there’s no way Vlade gives a darn about it, but ownership gets skittish with those kind of things.

I don't think Fox would have a problem with Doncic.

And if he did, it would be his own issues. He hasn't really proven anything in the league to demand anything from management. You prove it on the court.

If the Kings draft Doncic, he is not going to replace him at PG, that would be insane, because no way Doncic can stay up with ultra fast PG in the league. Doncic would be the Small (Point) Forward and they would share ball handling duties, like what GSW, Houston and Cleveland (used to do).

Fox needs to concentrate on improving his shot and Doncic will get him more open looks than he could ever get on his own.

Winning basketball is about sharing the ball and making everyone better. I think Fox understands that, he never seemed like a me first type of player to me.

Take a look at past NCAA players of the year or euro MVPs. It's not a who's who list of successful NBA players. Has nothing to do with how their games will translate.
I looked, turns out many of the NCAA players of the year were very good in the NBA:) Some were not so good. Most of the Euroleague MVP's stayed in Europe and had success there.

Most of the euro MVPs have played in the NBA at one point or another. NCAA is a mixed bag... For every ad there's a jimmer and a tray Burke.

I really like this line of thinking! Its what I am hoping for too!

Don't know where to put this, but Amick is saying that ownership is meddling with the decision making.

Meddle for Doncic --- All for it
You want Vivek to meddle for Doncic and overrule Vlade on this!

Yeah I listened for like the first hour and they were showing support for Doncic. That's about all I can muster, the shock jock New York act is unbearable.
To
Yeah we're looking for those handful of guys. They're the best prospects in the world. One of two of them might be in Europe, the rest are coming out of the NCAA.
Its not 1992 anymore.
When I see Luka make a play, I often think "Boggy can do that" I suggest fans watching Luka imagine whether Boggy can make the same play. More than not the answer is yes. What Luka can do Boggy cannot is he can throw longer cross court passes. His height allows him to see over the top to the weak side. This is a nice skill no doubt. Luka can also go battle with the bigs in the paint. Beyond this they are similar with Boggy the better shooter. Of course Luka projects as the better pro (due to his age and size) and of course it would be nice to add Luka to the team. But it is a luxury we cannot afford. Look at this play 0:35. Luka cannot beat his man out of a 1-4. Defender forces change of direction twice snd stays in front. The ref bails him out with a ticky tack call. I don't like the look at this play. It gives me a pause.

so too many high IQ players is a bad thing now. Ridiculous

Want to know exactly how athletic Doncic is compared to NBA players? How about we hear from the sports facility that tests NBA players and where Doncic also spend two summers having his athleticism evaluated? Unfortunately, the facility cannot share his data but did give a hint.

https://theathletic.com/399806/2018...one-man-knows-for-certain-and-hes-not-saying/

For two summers, Elliott ran Doncic through his tests, collecting data that would be invaluable to NBA teams. He can say precisely how Doncic’s athleticism matches up to the rest of the NBA. He knows if athletically Doncic is closer to, say, Zack Lavine or more like Kyle Korver. What he knows could help a team land a superstar or avoid a draft bust. Every team would love to know what Elliott knows, but here’s the catch: He’s not allowed to share it.

......

While world-class brakes don’t have the same prestige as elite hops, it’s here that Doncic shows a similarity to Harden. Acknowledging that testing numbers do not equal on the court results,Elliott has hinted at Doncic’s athletic qualities, including a Harden-esque ability to stop and change directions combined with elite lateral movement.

Another new video by Coach Nick at BBallBreakdown...
Yeah, he clearly prefers Doncic to Bagley.

I think he was generally fair to Bagley but (a) he clearly values skill over athleticism which isn't unexpected for a guy that makes skill training videos and calls himself Coach Nick and (b) I think he overestimates how much Luka can/will improve athletically with NBA strength & conditioning.

This is a great point! All of the guys in that Golden State core were passed up by the high lottery teams because they were seen as being low-ceiling roleplayers rather than potential stars. I would have passed on Steph, Klay, and Draymond at the time too.
A friend of mine brought up another name today -- Devin Booker. Lots of fans on this very sight gush about Booker, yet he's athletically limited too.
