DeMarcus Cousins: All NBA

So, with ESPN coming out with an article once again rehashing the same old tired is he a bad guy or misunderstood stuff, I decided it was time for me to pick thing sup and start unleashing some numbers into the fray.

We'll start with these. These are the stats for all of the league's starting centers this season -- in cases where mucked up teams like the Bucks had all kinds of starters, I went with the guy who has started the most games. In the case of Philly/Cleveland I took both Hawes and Varejao over any of the short term jokes who might have been options. In the case of New Jersey and Atlanta I left off Horford and Lopez entirely since they had only played in 22 and 19 games respectively and calling any of their replacements "starters" was kind of ridiculous.

Amongst the 28 starting centers Cousins is:
1st in PER
1st in Points
4th in Rebounds
6th in Assists
1st in Steals
12th in Blocks
1st (last) in Turnovers

To give you some idea what a 26.3 PER means, its the 27th best PER season by a center in the modern NBA era (1980 onwards). Of the 26 better PER seasons:
11 belong to Shaq (made an All NBA team all 11 seasons (First, Second or Third)
6 belong to Admiral (made an All NBA team all 6 seasons (First or Second)
4 belong to Duncan (made an All NBA team all 4 seasons (First)
2 belong to Amare (made an All NBA team both seasons (Second)
1 belongs to Moses (made an All NBA team (First)
1 belongs to Hakeem (made an All NBA team (First)
1 belongs to Yao made an All NBA team (Second)

No center in the modern history of the NBA has EVER posted a PER as high as DeMarcus Cousins' this season, and not made All NBA.

The gap between Cuz's current season and the highest rated PER season by a center in the modern era (Admiral's 1993-94 MVP year at 30.7PER) is 4.4PER. The gap between Cuz's current season PER and his nearest competitor is 3.8PER.

Spread this stuff around twitter or wherever you frequent. I'm half in Cousins camp on the double standards and B.S. here. this is an enormous season. Any further snubs after the All Star thing would begin to seriously urinate me off. Spread the word.

The NBA and its coaches must have to twist themselves into painful pretzels to deny Boogie's excellence. I doubt if anyone would explain this highway snubbery but I'd like to have someone give it a try. If the All Star game is for stars, what is Boogie?

Wow. I knew Cousins was having a great year, but I didn't realize just how great it really has been. That's some impressive stuff. We need to get this info to the Grantland peeps, Simmons, Lowe and those guys love PER.

To me Noah and Howard are locks for two of the three teams

That leaves Al Jefferson who's been ripping up and his team has similar talent and has a lot more wins than us so I assume he could get a spot and Roy"overrated" Hibbert who really imo does not deserve to be in the conversation but will be since he's a DPOY candidate.

Kwame Brown 2003-04: "Bust" 10.9 - 7.4 - 1.5 - 48.9% FG
Roy Hibbert 2013-14: "All-Star" 11.1 - 6.9 - 1.2 - 45.5% FG
DeMarcus Cousins 2013 Beast 22.2 - 11.6 - 3 - 49.7%FG

I'd love someone to post this on RealGMs general board, if possible. Many writers and NBA
front office guys, read that forum often.

Yeah, but, coming into this season, no center had ever posted 22/11/3, and not made the All-Star team, and we saw how that turned out...

All he has to do to get an All Star berth is keep his nose clean until the All Star break next year; a winning team would also be helpful. I don't need stats to tell me that he's been playing very well of late, similar to his play just before the All Star break. He's picking it up on the defensive end of the floor.

Cousins Has played like an AllStar this year. He IS all NBA 1st team. He is better than any center in the league. NAME ONE who has consistently out played him ? It is a travesty and a shame that he has gotten black listed and has not gotten the positive recognition for his outstanding performance this season. The Allstar voting is a SHAM. A popularity contest. But All NBA should NOT be a popularity contest. It should look at PER and all the other statistics that clearly show who the REAL top dog in the paint is. Cousins IS the best center in the league. Whether you want to look at numbers or the Eyeball test, he passes with flying colors...

The thing that irritates me more than anything on that list is that we basically discarded Robin Lopez up to POR as almost a throw away in the Tyreke deal. As far as Cousins and All Pro, despite the spectacular #'s (i am almost more impressed with his APG and SPG) won't happen until the team starts putting up some wins..at least sniff .500... or even 30 games.

never once in history has it not.

Then again I am not sure if ever once in history a franchise has been so incompetent it failed to put a winner around an interior force of this magnitude. This will be a telling summer.

I'll give the Bobcats PR team some creativity points (link), but looking at the numbers above Cousins bests Jefferson in just about every statistical category. Big Al making the all-NBA team over Boogie would be a farce.

Yeah its gonna be funny to see how the NBA deals with his All-NBA team selection lol no denying he deserves it! But how funny will it be for him to make it and to have not been selected as an all-star :/

sadly, as much as I respect him as a writer otherwise, Lowe very clearly has an agenda against Cuz. it started at some point when he bought into Keith Smart and pinned all of the Kings`shortcomings on Cuz and hasn't stopped since. and seeing as how Simmons would never ever dare speak against Lowe, there is very little chance of getting grantland on Boogie's side.

as with every media outlet, it'll take wins to convince most writers outside of sacramento that boogie's the real deal. and here's the thing: the kings are still hovering around .500 when cousins/gay/thomas are all healthy. if the front office successfully fills in some of the gaps this offseason, then there's no reason (barring major injuries) that this team can't build a bit more chemistry and maintain at least a .500 pace for the course of a season. that should be enough to start turning some heads considering how brutally tough the western conference is...

Actually, Simmons loves Cousins. He also loves the Celtics, and has been vicariously lusting for Cousins to be on the Celtics.

I dropped the second half of it on those guys. Will hit the NBA guys as well. Not sure about ESPN. Stein is pretty Boogie hostile. Might actually be able to tap Thorpe, despite my normal disdain.

Not sure whether to dump them on Kayte or not. Not sure she's a stathead. Realgm is a good idea.

twitter sucks for anything substantive. I have recently reactivated my account over there and could spread snippets of course, but it hardly lends itself to more than Boogie good!

I'd say Howard and Noah probably make 1st and 2nd team. Better teams, far bigger impact on the defensive end. PER basically ignores defense, so it makes sense that Boogie, being the best offensive C in the game, would be a lot higher than them. Cuz should comfortably come in 3rd

I think the guys you worry about are Hibbert, Duncan, and Al Jeff. Al Jeff is basically worse Boogie, on a better team and a much better national perception. The Hibbert calls for DPOY have fallen off a bit, but he's still in consideration there. And then you got the "life-time acheivement" award if they gave to Duncan.

I'm not attacking you at all when I say this but Cousins is EASILY the best center IN THE WORLD. The argument that anyone else compares is now at the point of being laughable. There is flat out no center out there that has anywhere near the overall impact on the game that Cousins has.

Just watching Denver/Memphis now and the announcer literally just said when talking about who should make the All-NBA teams "Obviously, you have to be on a winning team. I can't pick somebody that's on the Sacramento Kings to be an All-NBA performer." Those were his exact words. When you're dealing with stupidity like this it's actually easy to see how DeMarcus could be snubbed again (though I feel All-NBA 3rd team is the floor for him - there's no way he can't make that). It's the All-NBA team - it should consist of the best players from each position. It should NOT exclude half the league just because their teams are worse. Amazing that such a hard-headed, irrational view has come to be accepted as the status quo. A little critical thinking would go a long way, but most people are happy to be sheep. Too lazy to actually think for themselves.

Translation: "if I can just disqualify Cousins, maybe we can find a way to sneak Gasol back on there".

I don't necessarily disagree, but you also got to take into what voters think about Cuz. Virtually every national article refers to Cuz as the "talented hot-head".

But that's just plain ignorance and you can't do much to fix that.

Cousins deserves AT LEAST All-NBA Second team but, for this one season, I'd be OK with him getting on the Third team because he's still in the middle of fixing his bad-attitude image.

Obviously. If Kings were 50-26 right now, there'd be talk of how Cuz has "revamped his image" and such.

I don't have issues with Noah or Howard being ahead of him for All-NBA. Anyone else is just blantant ignorance of his play from national media.
